Freely-available mp3s of Irish and Scottish music played on the mandolin

Freely-available mp3s of Irish and Scottish music played on the mandolin

For some time I've been attempting to pull together a collection of Irish and Scottish music, played on the mandolin.

Now, I know that there's been some debate in these pages and elsewhere about whether the mandolin can be considered a trad instrument and so on. I don't want to reignite that debate, I simply want to alert those individuals who may be interested in hearing a wide range of approaches to "the music" on the mandolin to the fact that there's now a free resource out there which features some mighty playing. (Some of the music has been specially recorded and is unavailable elsewhere!)

To listen or download, go to http://www.paythereckoning.com/index2.htm

Let me know what you think.

Aidan this looks like a tremendous resource. I've only managed to get a listen to a few of the tunes and am forcing myself to do a bit more work before launching a longer exploration this evening. I'm stuck far away from any tunes and have recently been typing 'Irish Mandolin' into the search engine at Youtube in the hope of hearing different styles and learning new tunes, so your brilliant new collection is really a very timely answer to my prayers. Three cheers for Mr C and next person to the bar please buy him a pint.

Darren ... sure why wouldn't I include you ... there's no show without Punch! Excellent stuff!

Thanks to all the others for the kind words. This resource represents a fair bit of hard work by myself and others and tremendous generosity by the contributors, to whom I'm deeply indebted.

Re: Ptarmolin

Wow!
thanks for making this available, Aidan.
I just wanted to say, our fine feathered friend Ptarmigan has a very impressive track on here ( under the obviously fake nom-de-plectrum Dick Glasgow - who does he think he's fooling?). How does he play like that with his feathery wings? Nice going, ye auld arctic grouse, ye!

Re: Freely-available mp3s of Irish and Scottish music played on the mandolin

Congratulations Aidan! That is some web page - a wonderful collection of very varied styles. I'm sure you are delighted with the end result of your efforts. This is a great page to be able to point people towards who might be interested in hearing just what can be achieved on these Cinderella instruments!

Only problem I spotted Aidan, was that when you click on Kevin Macleod's:
" (Old Toasty (Angus Lawrie, Paterson's Publications)/Sabhail Iain Ic Uisdean/Roddie Macleod, Polbain (Freeland Barbour, Bonskeid Music)/Lord MacDonald"
.... what you actually hear is "O'Carolan's Draught/The Log Cabin/Bean a' Ti ar Lar"

Otherwise, it's absolutely brilliant!

Like John, I have already posted details on two other forums & a link to this fine page on the Mandolin page of my own site.

P.S. Patrick Cavanagh, I imagine Dick (real name - William Edinburgh! ;-)) finds triplets a dawdle, with all those primary quills to work with!
[ Incidentally, the fine Guitar work on that track was actually provided by one - 'Michael Sands'. ]

Re: Freely-available mp3s of Irish and Scottish music played on the mandolin

Well done, Aidan, for getting this off the ground despite all your setbacks. The suspense had been building for months over at mandolincafe.org . Then, just when we were all beginning to doubt the project would ever come to fruition, here it is. Perfect timing!

I've very much enjoyed listening to all those tracks I've got round to listening to - I look forward to hearing the missing Kevin McLeod track, when it gets sorted.

Ptarmigan - I love your contribution.

Aidan - if you can hang on 20 or 30 years before putting out vol.II, I might just be ready to make a contribution.

Re: Freely-available mp3s of Irish and Scottish music played on the mandolin

Hey Spoon, what about a contribution from you, on 'Portuguese Guitar', for Vol II? I hope Aidan doesn't wait for 20 years though!

Well-done Aidan, I'm glad you got it out in some form. Prior to your posting, I had been wondering about the progress, as your website had not been updated for some time. I hope you find some time to add more reviews - your site has been a great resource for me.

What a wonderful website. I've bookmarked it and sent it to friends, one of whom is a Scottish mandolin player---can't wait to hear what he thinks!

Re: Freely-available mp3s of Irish and Scottish music played on the mandolin

Re: Freely-available mp3s of Irish and Scottish music played on the mandolin

Hey Aidan, that missing Kevin MacLeod track was certainly well worth waiting for - 'Majestic Mandolin Music' indeed!

Re: Freely-available mp3s of Irish and Scottish music played on the mandolin

"...that missing Kevin MacLeod track was certainly well worth waiting for..."

Hear hear! The way h plays them, you'd think strathspeys were invented for the mandolin.

What I said above was this:

Firstly, I didn't learn to play the Portuguese guitar while in Portugal. Secondly, nobody plays it like Paredes.

But the mandolin is used in Portuguese traditional music. Perhaps I'll contribute something Portuguese.

Re: Freely-available mp3s of Irish and Scottish music played on the mandolin

I look forward to hearing that Portuguese track, Spoon.

"you'd think strathspeys were invented for the mandolin" - Aye, quite right spoon - after all, any eejit can rattle out a couple of fast tunes on a Mandolin, but Kevin makes playing tricky tunes sound just like childs-play!

By the way spoon, I always remember seeing one of these beautiful Portuguese Guitars in a 2nd hand instrument shop in Edinburgh, in the 70s, & being so frustrated that I just couldn't afford to buy it!

"I look forward to hearing that Portuguese track, Spoon."

You'll have to excuse the cockney accent.

Re: Freely-available mp3s of Irish and Scottish music played on the mandolin

No bovva matey!

By the way, I wonder what we would call the Banana now, or good old Tapioca, if we hadn't had the Portuguese words for them?

I've just uploaded a lovely set featuring Dan Beimborn with Tim O'Brien. If this doesn't get the ears flapping and the tongues wagging, the I don't know what will ...!

I'm enjoying listening to these tunes (at the expense of what I should really be doing on the computer!)
