What shall we do with these same judges every year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What shall we do with these same judges every year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dia duit a duine!!
My name is Conor Moore and i come from a big town in wexford called Gorey!I am 14 years old and hope to make the irish music profession!I have been praised from several ledgends in the irish music such as the band danu some old greats!!My family are a very talented musiscians and my uncle Pat Fitzpatrick is one of the most talented unique musicians I have ever come across!!
But my main point is that i have experienced the stage and many leinster events in over aged groups but the adjudicators always seem t lik the style with the very thin stick and the high pitched tone!!I myself have been graded 90%-99% in fleadh ceoils!!i use the similar style to donnacadh gough of Danu!!I dnt jst play a reel!!(in 4 4 time)!!i play the tune that comes from the heart!!but adjudicatos never seem to take to that style!!3 years now i av been adjudicated lik that!!So what shall i do session members!!
nb.i also teach bodhran in the gorey area if interested!!

Michael, you've hurt someone's feelings! Now apologize!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: What shall we do with these same judges every year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just accept that, if you want to win medals, you have to play in the way that pleases the judges - by the sound of it, you're quite capable of that. I think competitions are best viewed as an excercise in discipline, not an outlet for musical expression. When you play in sessions, play from the heart and your fellow musicians will appreciate it (unless one of them happens to be Llig Leahcim).

Carry on teaching Bodhran - there are many players out there in need of a good teacher. But if Llig ever turns up at your door wanting lessons, don't give him any.

Re: What shall we do with these same judges every year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously though - thats always been the problem with comps - the judges are only human and are always going to go for their personal taste of music. Maybe we should have a Trad Idol and then get the audience to vote. That way it isnt just up to a couple of judges who have no taste in tunes.

Re: What shall we do with these same judges every year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

sorry???????????????????????????

# Posted on September 27th 2006 by llig leahcim

Re: What shall we do with these same judges every year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh - I wasnt serious about the trad idol thing. I was serioust that generally Judges dont know which way is up re Trad - I've watched in constant horror over the years as they pass over deadly talented tune players in favour of boring straight laces 'over the moor to maggie' type players.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: What shall we do with these same judges every year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

word beebs. The quickest thing that will destroy musical and creative development is a competion. just look at the solo dancing world.

(and now, in a startlingly zen moment, feel the power of the LACK of exclamation marks....)

I've said this loads of time:

music competition = oxymoron

Re: What shall we do with these same judges every year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"irish music profession = ?"

No matter how you look at it, such a thing exists - and has done, in one form or another, for a long time. The travelling pipers of old were professional musicians, as were the harpers before them. So was Michael Coleman. So is Jacky Daly, Paddy Moloney, Matt Molloy, Mary Bergin, Sean Smyth, Mary MacNamara....

"sorry???????????????????????????"

MG (or is it GM, or LL) - that was a lot of question marks. I trust you understood that my remarks above were in reference to your well-known views on the Irish frame drum, and only that.

Re: What shall we do with these same judges every year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Connor!!! Hittin the caffeine a little too hard?!?!?!

Sorry for this to be the first thing I say to you, but I'm kind of the internet-security nazi....probably not a good idea to give out your full name, age, and town on any website (granted this is the session and it nothing should happen, but remember that anyone can read this)

Sorry I'm really not so uptight....It just struck me as probably not a good idea, esp. for a 14 year old.

As for your actual question, I really have no clue.

Re: What shall we do with these same judges every year

There - I just got rid of the exclamation marks - it didn't hurt a bit.
Solution to problem: just don't go to the competitions.

Re: What shall we do with these same judges every year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

true enough Donough... It's one of the great facets of the Australian trad scene that an "All-Australian" competition never really took off here. And long may it be so.

Re: What shall we do with these same judges every year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If we had a trad Idle it would have to be called "Diddily Idle"

Conzer,
have you posted your thoughts and frustrations on a specific bodhran players website/group?I think you'd probably get a good deal of feedback.I think it's called bodojo if you want to google it.
Best,

What language is Conzer speaking?
Besides his promiscuous use of punctuation, he seems to be using an alien style of grammar and spelling.
Is this the new e-mail style of writing I hear the youngsters are using?

Ah Al, that's the lingo of the new Celtic Tiger Ireland ... where there are more mobile (cell) phones that the entire bloody population. Where did we go wrong, I blame it on Denis O'Brien and his ilk :)

Re: What shall we do with these same judges every year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Agus conas ata tu, Conor. If you are from Gorey, you must play out at The Rock, I guess. Do you play a melody instrument as well or just the bodhran?

# Posted on September 28th 2006 by the wounded hussar

Re: What shall we do with these same judges every year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dont worry about it - good style will win out in the end. My mate Paul Phillips competed for around 8 years before finally winning the All Ireland title.

If you are hell bent on getting a title then maybe you should develop a 'competition' style just for them? If you are a really good player then it shouldn't be too difficult for you to change your style to suit - then again maybe you just want to be you and to hell with the judges?

Finally - if you enjoy playing your way and others around you like it as well then do you really need the approval of some CCÉ know nothings?

Re: What shall we do with these same judges every year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's funny how you call Danu "legends in irish music". To me it takes a bit more to call somebody a legend. But then again, since you're 14 they probably are an old band for you. No offence, I hope.

# Posted on September 28th 2006 by Beheader

Re: What shall we do with these same judges every year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

nope!!non taken!but c'mon they av t be the most talented musicians in ireland at the moment!!donnacadh gough is definetley one of the best bodhran players u av eva seen!!but c'mon, wots ur opinion on them!

# Posted on September 28th 2006 by Conzer

Re: What shall we do with these same judges every year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course they're good! I just don't think they make it to legends.
For me a legend would be someone like Seamus Ennis for example...

Re: What shall we do with these same judges every year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is a hand formula to remember when enetering alot of contests...

Contests+Music= Contests

# Posted on September 28th 2006 by The Merry Highlander

Re: What shall we do with these same judges every year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i wudn b a very compeditive chap but it hurts wen ppl come in and play a very plain boring jig nd a reel nd they comin out wit a 2nd r a 3rd!really annoys me!!

# Posted on September 28th 2006 by Conzer

Re: What shall we do with these same judges every year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Then you really need my formula.... I know its tough... Ive beeen to alot of contests and have won many but also lost... it has nothing to do with MUSIC. I like the contests where there's more socializing between the musicians than competition.

# Posted on September 28th 2006 by The Merry Highlander

Re: What shall we do with these same judges every year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

over here we have festivals, everyone has a roaring great time, terrible players are gently helped or get the blu tack as a last resort. Competitive music in my opinion is one gigantic farce.

# Posted on September 29th 2006 by Joze

Re: What shall we do with these same judges every year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, conzer, you have some difficult choices;
Do you want to win competitions ?
Do you want to win the approval of your fellow musicians ?
Do you want to make a career in music ?
Do you want to start writing in english ?
( Sorry about the last one, but you're not texting now ).
If the answer to the first question is "Yes" then there are 2 things you have to do; 1) play in the approved style, only better; 2) just follow the judges afterwards and see if they meet up with the fathers of the winners - I've heard there is a terrible problem with cronyism and corruption in some of these local events, it may be only a rumour, but it might be well to be aware of it.
As to the second and third questions, if you play with and for the best musicians you know, then you will be noticed and get ahead, and these competitions won't matter.

Re: What shall we do with these same judges every year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There's a simple solution to the judge problem: sort them out with a Brazilian cleaner. After a few weeks you'll have them in your pocket.

Re: What shall we do with these same judges every year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd like to take this opportunity to express how increasingly creeped out I am becoming by text message lingo as each day goes by. Everytime I see "u" or "l8r" I cringe, half expecting the porn site pop up window or an advert for genitalia extensions and/viagra (in a bonus combo pack).

I'm not sure whether I feel more or less comforted when it doesn't actually appear.

# Posted on October 4th 2006 by The Merry Highlander

Re: What shall we do with these same judges every year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't worry about them! The primary aim of competition is to further the level and competency at which Irish music is played, and give musicians a chance to gain experience in front of a crowd. If you enter any competition, such as the fleadh, siansa, scór na n-óg, réadóirÍ, even opportunity knocks out in the hall in kilanerin, whatever it may be, if you practice hard and up your standard of playing then you have succeeded.
I know where you are coming from, it is hard to practice, enter a competition and then feel as if the judges don't even consider you because you have a style of playing which they are'nt that fond of. I would urge you not to change your style just to win, but play in a style that you like, that suits you, and don't be changing to suit the personal fancies of a few wo/men given golden opinions for a day.
You'll get your break sometime, so have patience, keep plugging away, enjoy playing Irish music in the meantime and don't worry about winning!
Your friend,
Piper JJ

I have this mental picture of mg as an elephant & conzer as a little mosquito buzzing around.... Steph, am in complete agreement re: the texting thing. Linguistically interesting, personally irritating. Now I understand how my grandmother feels about email. :P

Re: What shall we do with these same judges every year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well Conor, I can't honestly say that I know you (sorry!!!!!!), although I've been competing in the Leinster for a while on the bodhran in the U-15s. I think what you should do is listen to the U-18s competition. You should also broaden your listening. OK, so Donncha Gough is an excellent player, but look at John Joe Kelly (Flook) and Eaomonn Murray from Beoga.

Don't worry too much about winning - it's not that important. It may be a bit of a cliché, but its the taking part thats important.
My friend Niall and I have been alternating in first and second place at Fleadhanna for years, and we dont let it get to us if one of us gets beaten by the other.

Keep Bangin'!!!!!!!
James
