Portugal

Portugal

hello chaps. It's a long time since I've stumbled this way, I'm glad to see that it's still the same reassuring shade of mustard. :-)

I'm thinking of taking a trip to Portugal soon - specifically, Lisbon. Can anyone advise me about where to go for music? Any good sessions in Lisbon, or elsewhere? And as for fado - how do you find the really good stuff? Synth-free and as God intended?

Any pointers would be great. In the meantime, hello and hugs to anyone that remembers me... :-)
Xx Nell

Re: Portugal

Nell.... hmm rings a bell. Anyway the spoon-man just got home from his epic walk to Portugal and back; apparently he found some music in Porto - not a great deal in Lisbon. Seeya soon! Cxx

Re: Portugal & Galicia

Oh, I remember you - you play the piano, or something? ;-)
I just thought, a bit late - I should have titled this Portugal and Galicia - I have been to Galicia once and would love to go again, I thought it was magical. So, while I'm over there... :-D
Any suggestions for Galicia as well?

Re: Portugal

Head for La Coruna and you might be lucky to get a few tunes there; otherwise find a festival! They're on all the time. I did tell you about the time a drunk but well-meaning temporary Geordie flatmate once asked me to, and I quote: "Give'us a choon on ya trumpet!"

Re: Portugal

HAHAHA!!!! :-D Trumpet must mean something else altogether in Geordie! Are you sure it wasn't a proposition?

Re: Portugal

I hope not! Poor guy was a bit confused with the beer. I suppose some of us have been there before ..... :)

Re: Portugal

Tsk!! I think it might require more than alcohol, before you start confusing a piano accordion for a trumpet... You know how it is - this traditional music malarkey - it only leads to crack cocaine.

Re: Portugal

"I just wanted to learn a few tunes", that's what they all say. But one thing leads to another. First it's set dances, then hornpipes, then it's reels. Then the reels get faster... and faster... next thing you know, you're a crack whore. :-(

Re: Portugal

God, this is getting WAY off topic. Not borshcht! Gambas! Pulpo! A la Gallega!! Albarino, Vino Joven! Come on - focus!

Re: Portugal

Anyone see the match yesterday?

# Posted on September 19th 2006 by Conán McDonnell

Re: Portugal

Um? Which match? 'gusto' I think. I do know Porto are playing Arsenal next week.

# Posted on September 19th 2006 by Nell

Re: Portugal

Kerry V Mayo. Just thinking - Mayo is Spanish for "May" and by a strange coincidence is also the perfect compliment to.........chips! Full circle in a completely off-topicamundo way.

Re: Portugal

There are 2 twin brothers called Marco (fiddle) & Bruno (flute)from Portugal who frequent this site (or used to anyhow)... I'm sure they'd be able to tell you the craic about tunes in Portugal.

Alright Conán?

What did you think of the match?

I was a bit dissapointed for Mayo, but it was possibly the most mis-matched All Ireland SFC I've ever seen. Poor Mayo's confidence was gone after they messed up that goal attempt around the 8th minute or so... they should have kept chipping away at points instead of gung-ho goal attempts so early (IMO)...

Ciaran Mc Donald's confidence was gone a bit after that, felt pretty sorry for him too, as he was playing his heart out. The Mayo team and fans just looked devistated!

Re: Portugal

Nell, I don't know if you'll make it this far through the waffle, but if you do, one good place in Lisbon for fado is Parreirinha de Alfama (sic). The dinner isn't cheap but it's excellent and the music is radically conservative. The lady who owns and runs the place, Argentina Santos, is Empress.

Cheers

Re: Portugal

Hi Nell and Conan, nothing of note to say beyond 'Good morning' and 'long time no see, no hear'.

Re: Portugal

Hey Murrough! yeah I didn't see it live - saw a recording of it. I had a sneaking suspicion the occasion would get to Mayo and so it proved. 34 championships is a bit greedy if you ask me.

Sarge fox! Good to hear from you. Which country (or planet) are you inhabiting these days?

Reedy Grins, I never waffle; there's always a deeper meaning ;)

Re: Portugal

I was in Lisbon in November and found some excellent fado at one particular restaurant. I posted that in a previous discussion here, which I found searching "fado" and "Lisbon" together.

Love those big cittern-y guitars they play.

Re: Portugal

Hello Helen and Conan! Glad you are both still around :)

I've never been to Portugal (only Madeira) so I'm no help whatsoever.

I should be at the Herschel next week if you're around

Re: Portugal

"those big cittern-y guitars"

That's the Guitarra - 'Portuguese guitar' in English. It is really a cittern though. Allegedly, it is descended from the 'English guitar', a type of cittern popular in England a few centuries ago.

Re: Portugal

Hello .
"me gustan mucho las patatas" (spanish)
"gustanme moito as patacas" (galician)
"bacalHao" (portoguese)

You should find some good fado places in the Alfama quarter.
I love Libon, I went there for a week few years ago and I fell in love with it. Specially the alfama and bairro alto I love the old quarters with small houses and narrow streets without cars.

I´m from A Coruña, Galicia. Ask me anything you want about Galicia . There are a lot of places you shoud visit here but if you want to see the best festivals you must wait till the next summer .

Re: A Coruña

I stumbled across a session in A Coruña, purely by chance, in a pub called A Cova das Celtas. It was just a one-off session (I just happened to be walking past on the right day, at the right time), but they were talking about trying to start up a weekly one there. I notice there are no sessions listed for Galicia here.
