I'm starting a session!

I'm starting a session!

I wish we could all get toghether and jam! But, we all live on different sides of the world..sooo.. I'm starting a session right here on discussions; type in your favorite tunes or sets. Make sure to put down how fast you play it, what instrument you play, and how many reps! I'll start us off w/ an old fav set of mine:

The Luck Penny/Morrisons/Drowsy Maggie/Coolys on fiddle, starting out nice and slow, but the time me make it to Maggie, it's rockin'!!!! Got a tune to come after that? lets hear it!

oh, and 3 reps each. :-)

# Posted on September 9th 2006 by BE

Re: I'm starting a session!

Uh... Morrisons is a jig, Drowsy Maggie is a reel... how do you plan to keep us all together during the change?

# Posted on September 9th 2006 by tuckered out

Re: I'm starting a session!

Am I really reading this?

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by No Cause For Alarm

Re: I'm starting a session!

Come now, never heard of jig to reel transitions, Alistair and Mick? Thought everyone who was anyone has done them, since Bothy at least. What's the prob? So I'll add mine that seems a fairly natural auto-progression: Cliffs of Moher into Farewell to Ireland. Instrument: fiddle; pace: a steady lick; repeats: three for the jig and two for the reel. Good on you hottfiddler for starting this session on "the session", and hi to you and everyone who joins in. Oh! To be 14 again, and ready to change the world. What a lovely idea to hold an inclusive global sess.

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by Clear Drops

Re: I'm starting a session!

OK, Hottfiddler, what a great bio- I love your enthusiasm. I agree with Old Scraper... oh to be 14 again...

I'll bite- Banish Misfortune, 3 times, into Blackthorn Stick, 3 times, nice brisk tempo, and I'm on my grandfather's fiddle with my pint standing by.

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by Greg the Piano Tuner

Re: I'm starting a session!

Christmas Eve/The Maids of Mt. Kisco 3 times each, played at a nice lilty Rafferty like tempo. Reminds me of the sessions I used to go to in NJ before I went off to school in Mass. Oh yeah, I will be playing the Flute.

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by Why Bother?

Re: I'm starting a session!

Christ. Bloody kids. All too fast for me. I'm off to the bar

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by llig leahcim

Re: I'm starting a session!

Now, let's slow down a bit more with slip jigs. Dever the Dancer / Taim in Arrears / Hardiman the Fiddler / Fig for a Kiss

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by slainte

Re: I'm starting a session!

That was not what I meant. I have seen plenty of jig to reel (and reel to jig to reel to jig to reel and so forth - that keeps you on your toes). I just meant this is all quite surreal.

OK

On a Scottish theme then:

Duncan Johnstone into Fleshmarket Close into The High Drive.

Start at a steady pace. Duncan Johnstone is a 4 part hornpipe so twice will do into Fleshmarket Close (reel) 3 times before hitting the High Drive at a monsterous speed (not sure if the change works but who cares!!) Remember there are 4 parts to the High Drive not 2 but it is that good a tune that will we be prepared to stop after the third time through?

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by No Cause For Alarm

Re: I'm starting a session!

I'd mix Irish, Scots and Cape Breton tunes like this:
Tommy Peoples' (Gmaj one) / Brenda Stubbert's / Jenny Dang the Weaver / Longford Tinker

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by slainte

Re: I'm starting a session!

Actually they would go together fine. What would be great was if there was a split second pause between the two reels to give the High Drive that extra kick!!

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by No Cause For Alarm

Re: I'm starting a session!

What a racket! Do you lot know each other? Why are they playing Scottish tunes in that corner and you haven't finished the Irish tunes in this?

I would join in but I can't find a seat, I'll have a look next door for a stool.

Re: I'm starting a session!

I'm just learning---anyone mind if I tape record a set to bring home and practice?

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by kennedy

Re: I'm starting a session!

Because the Irish guys can't take a hint ;-)

Anyway the real problem is the bar hasn't switched the stereo off so I can still hear Shania Twain!

Kennedy - of course you can tape a set. If I find a recording of it down at the Barras market though you will be in trouble!!!

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by No Cause For Alarm

Re: I'm starting a session!

P.S. Barras - The famous Barrowland Market in Glasgow (lots of illegitimate as well as legitimate stuff on sale there)

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by No Cause For Alarm

Re: I'm starting a session!

Hic, can you play the Lonesome Boatman and Danny Boy? Lend me your Bodhran, hic...

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by Feargal French

Re: I'm starting a session!

Hey, Kennedy. You really ought to get one of those new mp3 recorders.

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by GaryAMartin

Re: I'm starting a session!

Yeah, Gery, I know, but I just bought my fiddle, so I can't afford anything else for the next few months...

Ok, i need another drink; exuse me for a moment!
.......

.....

i'm back; how about The Bus Stop into Red Crow?

Re: I'm starting a session!

A couple in E major - Amy's Waltz (a Canadian tune played on Sharon Shannon's album "Libertango" - I think it's done in E, anyway), followed by the jig Calliope House. The other musicians might drop out at this point, but I suppose there's a chance that the bodhran player might carry on!...

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by nicholas

Re: I'm starting a session!

hows about boys of bluehill/ chief o'neills favourite/harvest home . Three times each.

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by blueveetwo

Re: I'm starting a session!

Hey, I love Calliope House! I'm with you on that- don't know Amy's though...I'll fake it! can't be too hard now can it?

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by BE

Re: I'm starting a session!

oops, haha.. yeah the hornpipes are all good... three x each though? It'll take a bloody long time to get through all of them!!!

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by BE

Re: I'm starting a session!

As the Session 'leader' hottfiddler, can I suggest that it be you who we nominate to go over & have a quiet word with that guy with the fur coat & cowboy hat, who has been honking his Didgeridoo & beating the bejayzus out of his Djembe while tapping his Tambourine under the table with his foot, through every tune since he sat down.

Let's be fair, he arrived out of the blue & didn't even ask if he could join in before grabbing one of the 'good seats'. Even worse - his Didge is in C# & his Djembe is flat!

Now of course we don't wish to discourage him, but someone really does need to say something or this session will just not survive, or at the very least, the good players won't be back!

Now if you don't fancy speaking to him, then might I suggest you ask the next most tactful member of our little group to say it to him, like it is & you'll find 'him' over there at the bar, by the Zimmer frame, waiting for us whipper snappers to slow down!

Anyone fancy a Planxty?

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by Ptarmigan

Re: I'm starting a session!

Dude, that is not fair! That guy looks like he would EAT me if I even looked at him funny....he has got to be at least 6'9", and with those boots he's easily 7'!!! Why don't we all just head down to that other pub across the way? Leave him here!

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by BE

Re: I'm starting a session!

I'm starting The Nine Points of Roguery and two wonderful tunes following whose name I don't know.

And no; I don't want to hear a recitation. We're already heard it 20 times, and it's not funny anyway.

If we ignore the digeridoo player, maybe he'll just go away.

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by cathrynb

Re: I'm starting a session!

"That guy looks like he would EAT me if I even looked at him funny" - Och he's not that big really, haven't you noticed he's wearing 6 inch platform heels? But sure if your that concerned, why not just set llig on him - he'll do anything for a pint & a wee half!

Surely it must be time for an ould song now, isn't it? - any volunteers?

What about yourself Cathy?

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by Ptarmigan

Re: I'm starting a session!

Lay off the poor didge player, guys. He's me cousin.

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by Clear Drops

Re: I'm starting a session!

Right Scraper, you speak to him!

Hey, I see Tommy Peoples has just wandered in, so if you do it now, maybe we can get him to join us & give him the Didge player's seat?

OK ................................. anyone know any Donegal tunes?

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by Ptarmigan

Re: I'm starting a session!

"Boys of bluehill/ chief o'neills favourite/harvest home, three times each"? I'm glad I left when I did

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by llig leahcim

Re: I'm starting a session!

Tommy Peoples can have my seat, I'd be proud to offer it to him. I'll sit it out on the floor next to the didge and we will just listen and learn a lot. It won't be for the first or last time, and some of us are happy just to be here at this sess at hottfiddler's invitation. May I also remind you, Ptarmi, that you are also here at hottfiddler's invitation. Need I say more?

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by Clear Drops

Re: I'm starting a session!

Good thread. I'll start a set on me banjo.

Sporting Paddy/Bird in the Bush

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by 52Paddy

Re: I'm starting a session!

ok then let's see what mass mayhem we can cause here with that didg player. I'll take care of him rather quietly outside and we'll carry on. When I come back in we'll move on to leitrim fancy (D) hangman's noose (G) and brown chest (D) lively and tight and I'll be on the bodhran. ;-)

p.s. thanks to the barmaid for a cloth to clean off me hands before i start playing.

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by newfie percussionist

Re: I'm starting a session!

Where are your manners, Mr Gill?

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by Clear Drops

Re: I'm starting a session!

Don't mind me, I'm just going to sit in the corner & pretend to sulk after Scraper snapped at me! :-)

Of course, if hotfiddler does ask me 'politely' to leave, I will!

Or if not, maybe I'll just noodle my way through Tommy's Donegal sets, after all they're easy to pick up aren't they?

Hmmmm

But no, that would be just plain rude to noodle at a session & anyway, I notice Tommy has just left, probably gone after Mr Gill, so I got myself a wee hot Whisky instead & am just waiting my chance to launch into The Bird in the Bush, Ah Surely & The Maids of Mt Cisco on me trusty Concertina.

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by Ptarmigan

Re: I'm starting a session!

Ptar, we've already done the Maids of My Cisco and Bird in the Bush....!!! It is a strict policy we have of not repeating tunes!

:-P

Hey, how about a solo Ptar?I request th Mountain top.

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by 52Paddy

Re: I'm starting a session!

Darn it, you guys always play the best tunes when out taking a leak!

As for the Mountain Top, sure thing & I'll follow it with Ah Surely, but only if everyone else plays too - I don't do that exhibition stuff - just not good enough d'ya see!

However, since Feargal has his 'Andreas Rogge "B"' set with him tonight, howsabout a slow air from him, into a couple of reels of his choice?

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by Ptarmigan

Re: I'm starting a session!

Ah is that Feargal over there? Sure thing, seems like a nice fella.

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by 52Paddy

Re: I'm starting a session!

OK, how about Táimse im' chodladh, and does anyone want to tune down their fiddle?

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by Feargal French

Re: I'm starting a session!

Reels, "The Holly Bush" & "The Trip to Dublin"

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by Feargal French

Re: I'm starting a session!

Well... I am a new whistle player... I am REALLY enjoying this session... I'm a big dig fan... maybe I could sneak him outside (hint hint) and ask him to teach me how to play? Won't be gone too long because I would return (without him) tol hide off in a corner where no one can hear me and I can hear myself. I will plug a few notes of tunes I recognize and try to get a few more in my head.

Mayyyyyyyyyyybe I'll even quietly whisper to Hottfliddler (would never do this unless we were friends, but hey, fantasy moment, right?) and ask him to play Mountain Road?

I will leave it a surprise to see what else you put into the set.

Smiles!

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by meika2u2

Re: I'm starting a session!

I've got my concert chanter - can anyone give me an "A"?

BTW, did any of you tune up at all yet?

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by Feargal French

Re: I'm starting a session!

Air "The Pearl", by Phil Cunningham, a few times through when a few drinks have been consumed; then, when a sense of false security has been aroused, selected and positioned players (including those who have unobtrusively smuggled Great Highland Warpipes into the proceedings) suddenly break into one of those Balkan things with time signatures in prime numbers, at full belt.

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by nicholas

Re: I'm starting a session!

When the hour is late, there will be a prolonged singing of "Wild Mountain Thyme", accompanied by some of every instrument in the room. These will include every known type of bagpipe currently being played in the UK, Ireland and France, in their various different keys
(Northumbrian pipes in old tuning will participate in this...).

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by nicholas

Re: I'm starting a session!

WARNING: Cathryn is going to sing!

Rendition of "Traveler's Prayer" from the eponymous John Renbourn album, minus the verse that starts "In the name of Christ Jesus."

# Posted on September 10th 2006 by cathrynb

Re: I'm starting a session!

Oh no, someone at the bar has requested "Fields of Athenry !". There's always one.
Play them "Danny Boy" quick and slip out to the next pub while they're still maudlin.

# Posted on September 11th 2006 by Guernsey Pete

Re: I'm starting a session!

Ooooh! my first session! I ignore everything I have ever read about session etiquette (along with the good manners my parents forced into me when I was little) and sit down not to far away, not very subtly getting my whistle out and hoping a tune I know will come my way - not bloody likely it seems - but then again, it's a great listen.

# Posted on September 11th 2006 by Tirno

Re: I'm starting a session!

Would this session have a location, smelly or otherwise?

# Posted on September 11th 2006 by nnicharra

Mountain road, coming right up! Maybe into Man of the house? THis is great, a 2 day session!

Hey, you... no, YOU! You with the banjo! Do you do any Elvis?

# Posted on September 11th 2006 by DaveL35

Re: I'm starting a session!

At this point a few roast pigs are removed from their spits in the chimney-breast over the fire, and carved up for the meat to be heaped up on innumerable paper plates on tables in the daytime dining room, just next to where the session is going on. Limitless drink of every reasonable kind will of course be available for nothing - while we're eating, I'd settle for any decent cheap French red wine...

# Posted on September 11th 2006 by nicholas

Re: I'm starting a session!

nnicharra,
Its right in the here and now in cyberspace, only limited by our own collective imaginations. Are you in fer a tune or two? Will yah?
Congratulations, hottfiddler, on two days. Very impressive, and an awesome international turn up of mixed calibre at a great sess. The Mountain Road/Man of the House set rocked. Good on yah!

# Posted on September 11th 2006 by Clear Drops

Re: I'm starting a session!

Darn it, I was up at the bar trying to persuade the staff to open a few windows to get rid of some of the smoke in here so I missed Feargal's tune in B!

However, since you've strapped on yer concert chanter Sir, how'sabout a Pipes & Concertina duet of 'The Gold Ring'?
But only twice through, ......... or maybe once would do ..... in fact, maybe we shouldn't even bother doing it at all, ........ tell you what, you pick a good tune?

Can someone tell that drunk by the door that although we do have two Banjos, we actually need a Guitar & a Banjo for his request - 'Dueling Banjos' ........... & even if we had a Guitar, we don't know that tune anyway!

Anyone else going for a curry after this?

# Posted on September 11th 2006 by Ptarmigan

Re: I'm starting a session!

Scraper... I'd ask you to squidge your chair up so I could squeeze mine in, but you seem to be still on the floor and looking a little uncomfortable - I guess you'll have that when you have a didge playing cousin looking down at you from his perch!

Ptar - give me two secs to get 'anchored' here on this rickety stool (why do I always get the rickety ones!) and then I'll join you for a concertina duel - follow Gold ring with Trip to Athlone and the Luck Penny? Oops a repeat - gasp. How about the old reliable Kesh - or have we played that to death already? Hmmm this isn't as easy as it looks...I think I'm slurring my notes already....Whose round is it anyway - or are we getting freebies???

# Posted on September 11th 2006 by nnicharra

Re: I'm starting a session!

OK nnicharra, ready when you are, after three ................... three!

Hey nnicharra, & before you get too pished to walk, well you know how you get after your usual 14 pints, howsabout a few of them old Riverdance steps. I'll get the barmaid to clear the old glasses off that table over by the window!

Have you got yer heavy shoes with you?

# Posted on September 11th 2006 by Ptarmigan

Re: I'm starting a session!

What, no polkas in this virtual session?

Dennis Murpheys/John Ryans/Maggie In The Woods/Ger The Rigger/Bill Sullivan's/Ratlin' Bog/Ballydesmond #2 (or is that#1?)

Two times each, bright and quick but not too fast ...

# Posted on September 11th 2006 by KeepFiddlin'

Re: I'm starting a session!

A, or the, Northumbrian spot at an advanced hour would be "The Blaydon Races", sung with its truly bestial traditional roar in the chorus, followed immediately by "The Keelman Ower The Land" in as many parts as are known, played fast but not too fast and in whatever order seems best by two Northumbrian pipers playing in F, going into duet mode second time through, accompanied by guitar and /or cittern and / or bass guitar, with long notes on viola backing and bodhran coming in at some stage, all this having been worked out carefully beforehand by the players - scrambles my brain just to think about it!

# Posted on September 11th 2006 by nicholas

Re: I'm starting a session!

OOOOOOOOoooo, two days and the sess is just startin to warm a bit. Nice set, nnicharra though I couldn't tell if it was the Luck Penny or the Kesh you was playing there, must have been the ricketty stool. Duelling concertinas!@#$ Riverdance. A seven set of polkas. We can go one better Ptarmi, I recon. Turn up the tables for a spot of dancing will you, there's a good lad. So I'll tack on 'Turn up the tables' to that polka set, if rzaikoski is finished. I wonder who (of those regular 14 pinters) will be the first evicted from the sess for snorrrrrrrin out of time with the music?

# Posted on September 12th 2006 by BE

Re: I'm starting a session!

It's a jig called "Tell Her I Am" - it's sheet music, ABC's and comments are in the "Tunes" section of "The Session" website.

Re: I'm starting a session!

Wake up everyone - I think we're on the Joyful Mysteries...

Ah Ptar - you would mention the war wouldn't you! Scraper had it right - @#! RD.... As for dancing - I can't afford to pay ye all to have to watch me! (BTW do hob nail boots count as heavy shoes?)

Now if we were to play a set of slides, that'd be different! How about Johnny O Leary's / An Chóisir / The Hare in the Corn?

Anyone still awake? I'll get my bow out and start jabbin ye! We're only on day 3 after all...

# Posted on September 12th 2006 by nnicharra

Re: I'm starting a session!

"do hob nail boots count as heavy shoes?" - aye they do nnicharra, but ye canny dance in them 'pink' Wellies yer wearin'! Ha Ha :-)

Don't wake up the bodhran player, just get his drum & lie it flat on the table. It'll do as a dry clean-ish surface for the plate of Bacon Butties I've just ordered for breakfast, how many for Coffee?

Now, back to business - anyone for a quick blast of 'Boil the Breakfast Early' & 'Whiskey before Breakfast'?

# Posted on September 12th 2006 by Ptarmigan

Re: I'm starting a session!

Nice idea on the use of the Bodhran - I've actually seen a tea pot put on one once, and melt its way through. Funny how no-one called a warning. Everyone just sat there staring fascinated:-)

Anyways, tell me there's a tune called "Hair of the dog that bit you"....there has to be!

Oh yeah, and I'm having the full Irish:-)
