I've just bought a CD by the Swedish group Vasen.Great stuff. The sleeve notes are in Swedish and one of the guys is credited with playing the "Svensk Bouzoki" What is this? Is it a bouzouki with the headstock carved into the shape of the chef from The Muppets?
Most probably an instrument built by Swedish luthiers Ådin & Ekvall (http://www.luthiers.nu).
Very similar to the modern flatback Irish ouzouki, but whith small and distinct differences in detail. Sometimes 4 and sometimes 5 courses. Slightly shorter scale length than the Irish bouzouki.
If it's not built by Ådin & Ekvall, it's at least an instrument of that type.
And you're right Daffyd - great stuff.
Roger Tallroth (the swedish bouzouki player) mostly plays the twelve string guitar in ADADAD-tuning. He uses bass strings for the lowest course and gets a lovely deep sound from it. He has - among many others - collaborated whith Dervish (he wrote Josefin's Waltz) and Seamus O'Dowd is inspired by him.
Funny, I was just listening to them playing "Josephine's waltz."
There's a website, www.TVfolk.net, where you can see videos of music from about a dozen countries, including Sweden, which is Vasen's country of origin. Great site if you're curious and would like to sample the music to see if you like it well enough to buy a CD.
