Me too - I play with the band Slainte (the UK version!) and I'm from Gloucestershire, UK. Play mainly the celtic harp, but also paraguayan, wire and pedal.
I think it's more fun to play in a band than solo, so that's what I mostly do, that and the odd session in pubs.
I play celtic harp, and sing with my harp as well. I play in local sessions and with two bands.I love playing back-up and playing with other musicians.I live in Shokan NY near Woodstock and organize one of our local sessions.
I often play with a great guitarist and we play off each other.
It gives a very unique solid back-up sound. Sometimes the harp is just icing on the cake.
The guitarist plays whistles as well... then he gets harp back-up. I love the sound of low whistle and harp...
I don't think I will ever become a solo harper. It's too much fun to play with others.
I am probably going to get a compact 34-stringer over next summer. But I want to put in another good winter's worth of fluting before adding something more to the mix.
I'm in the US - central VA. I'm learning a lot about harp accompaniment by listening to DADGAD guitar players at sessions. I like to play with my kids (one daughter on flute, another on whistle, my son on either accordion or bodhran) We also sometimes play as a band with a couple of friends on fiddle, bass, mandolin and hammered dulcimer, but mostly at low-key local events.
Hello Fearghal, I don't play Harp myself but Mrs Ptarmigan does.
She plays in Pub sessions up here in North Antrim, each week, although she would play mostly accompaniment & just the odd tune.
People often comment that they find it rare to see a Harp in a session, but I'm sure you'll soon be doing your bit to change that notion in Co Down too.
Hey Joe, now don't you go causing any more trouble over here in Harp land! I mean to say, you've already caused enough commotion with that Didge thread of yours, next door!
Any harpers about?
Any harpers about?
Hi - are there any other harpers on 'thesession.org' and if so, where are you from? I'm from Newcastle, Co. Down - Northern Ireland.
