Got this from a thread over on Chiff and Fipple. June McCormack has recently published a nifty little flute tutorial with 2 CDs.
For a mere $25 USD, you get the two CDs with 76 tracks and a sheet music book of 64 tunes. June says she picked the tunes as ones well suited to the flute, and she plays each one at both slow and session speeds on the CDs (unaccompanied, so you can hear every nuance). The book includes tips on cuts, long and short rolls, crans, and other tools of the trade.
I just got my copy (am not affiliated with Ms. McCormack in any way, usual disclaimers, blah, blah) and would highly recommend it to anyone interested in Irish flute.
To order the tutorial directly from June ,go to http://www.draiochtmusic.com/ and click on the "Fliut" button on the left.
Just got my copy as well and am really enjoying the tunes. I hear that June is a great teacher in person as well. I hope to learn from her up at Friday Harbor Irish music camp near Seattle next March.
June McCormack is going to be at Friday Harbor next March? Where did you hear that? At the final concert there this past March, Randal Bays announced that the entire staff from this year had been asked back for next year. That includes Catherine McEvoy teaching flute. Has there been a change?
I heard that from a flute player I met in Colorado but can't remember his name. It is quite possible that he mixed up the two names - or I may have mixed up the names. Sorry for the confusion.
I took both June & Catherine this year at the Catskills (what a week!), & June's tutorial sold out the first night. I did manage to get a copy, & cannot recommend it highly enough. Fantastic selection of 64 tunes, played both slowly & more quickly, but more importantly, she emphasizes ornamentation, even adding new phrases to the vernacular such as 'bounces' (different than a straight finger bounce) & 'elongated cut,' among others --- also she adds specific notations to the sheet music to indicate when & where each type of ornament is used. The first several tracks on the CD are simply exercises to practice her specific ornaments which she also explicitly explains in the book. I believe the project was the result of her Masters work at Limerick. The tunes are fantastic, with appropriate acknowledgements to where/whom etc she learned them.... Get it, it's absolutely brilliant!
PS If she's married to Michael Rooney, do we still call her Ms. McCormack?
Yes, incredibly June McCormack's new Flute tutorial sold out on the very first night at the Catskills Irish Arts Week. I am glad to say that she and her husband will be returning to East Durham next summer for the CIAW (july 8-14) and we are hopeful that Catherine McEvoy will return as well.
Fliut tutorial... Problem with PayPal setup for me
I tried to order this, but PayPal wouldn't let me ship it to my home in Japan. Since my billing address is set up as "United States", the shipping address is hardcoded to United States (I can setup other shipping addresses, but only in the US; I can't change the country). Can someone tell me if there is any way to set PayPal up to ship to a non-US address if the billing address is US?
Yes, June I just heard has brought the new tutorial. Its bound to be good as herself and Michael are great musos with plenty of teaching experience. So buy it!
I was just at the Boxwood Flute Festival in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia (small festival), and June was there! I managed to snag a copy of the book, and although I haven't had much time yet to sit down with my flute and play through stuff, the book seems really good. I found June to be a very good analyst of what she does with a tune, and why she puts certain ornaments in certain places (which I found really helpful). Her way of breaking down and isolating ornaments is great! I doubt I will completely adopt her style (it can't really be copied), but there are definetely elements that I will bring into my own playing. She's just an amazing teacher, and playing tunes with her and Michael was absoutely the highlight of my week!
So go buy the book

Do we still call her Ms. McCormack? Yes, professional name, if nothing else.
