Instruction DVDs for Fiddle?

Instruction DVDs for Fiddle?

Hi everyone! *waves*

I'm just starting out playing fiddle, and I was wondering if I should buy some sort of "learning Irish fiddle" DVDs to help me, such as the Kevin Burke series?

I'm mostly interested in Irish fiddle music, not classical so much, but I have been using a book and sheet music to help me out. Now that I know quite a few scales and the like, should I stop using the book and reading the music, and should I just try to play tunes by ear?

Thanks!

I am a very happy (recent) purchaser of the Kevin Burke series. Still working on the first couple of tunes...but I like the method.

Re: Instruction DVDs for Fiddle?

If you are mainly interested in irish fiddle, the only dvd i've seen is those two from Kevin Burke, they are great. You have also a cd-rom tutorial from Cathal Hayden, this is almost like dvd and available from madfortrad. I've also heard about a dvd with Dale Russ but have never seen it, if someone know where it is available please tell.

Burkes lessons are available from
http://www.homespuntapes.com

Here you also find a good (intermediate) lesson with Natahalie Macmaster (from Cape Breton, Canada). This is not the same as irish, but it's this music have the same celtic hertitage.

If you are interested in all sorts of fiddling, there are a bunch of lessons (still at homespun) avalable in the bluegrass, country, cajun genre ++

Look for dvds marked with level 1 or 2 (or level all)

good luck

Re: Instruction DVDs for Fiddle?

If you can, have some one-to-one lessons with a real live teacher as early as possible. Tutor DVDs, no matter how good and informative, cannot possibly see the mistakes you will make (and all beginners make them, believe me!), and correct them before they become habits that get more and more difficult to break.

Re: Instruction DVDs for Fiddle?

Thanks, everyone. I've decided on the Kevin Burke DVDs and ordered them off Amazon.

I've taken a few lessons to get me started, but now I'm pretty much on my own. I appreciate all of your input! Thanks.
