Can anyone suggest a name for my fiddle album?

Can anyone suggest a name for my new fiddle album?

Hi Everyone,

My name's Iain Anderson. I'm recording my debut fiddle album in Edinburgh this coming weekend (18th and 19th August ). The sleeve notes have been written and the tunes have been rehearsed but i still don't have a title!!! I'm trying to steer clear of titles like 'Fiddlesticks' and 'Fit as a Fiddle' ... What I need is something catchy! If you have any good suggestions and I use it, I'll send you a copy if you give me a contact ...

Many, Many Thanks!!!

Iain Anderson.

Re: Can anyone suggest a name for my fiddle album?

"Yep, It's Spelled Correctly"
"Bowed and Unbroken"
"Bows and Scrapes"
"Rosined and Ready"

# Posted on August 14th 2006 by joesmith

The fiddle often gets the focus, the bow and rosin less so ~
Bowing Out / Bowing In
Bowing to Convention / Bowing to Tradition
Bow to the Fiddle
Bow and Scrape
Horse Hair and Pine Resin
Rosin and Bow / Rosin the Bow
Rosin Dust
Fire in the Rosin
A Glint of Amber / The Amber Stone
Ian's Amber / Wood Pitch & Horse Hair

~ It would help to know more about the album and it's content and inspiration...and the 'author'... It seems a very personaly thing. Here's a trick as recommended by a famous Sci-Fi author, Ray Bradbury, and you can do it with yourself or friends. You musn't edit anything at all, however absurd or rediculous or rude it might be ~ sit down and just let your brain cells loose and let them be silly ~ write down everything, or tape it for that matter, but don't stop, just let it keep flowing and being whatever it wants to be and go wherever it wants to go ~ WITHOUT EDITING IT ~ before or during, just let go. After a long bought of nonesense, you could take a rest, maybe have a drink, and then either go over all the wild carefree creations that came, or give it another try or two and save the 'review' till later, even the next day. Usually you'll surprise yourself, or you and whoever else you might invite in on the fun, and you'll find a few good possibilities amongst a lot of varied content, much of it which may not have any bearing whatsoever on your subject. That would be a good sign, that you didn't hesitate and get in the way of this exercise in freedom. Ray Bradbury described it better than I can, but it is fun and it has gotten me out of a few similar ruts myself, and has worked for others too, including Ray Bradbury. So, find a little time, give it a try, and have fun with it. If you get a lot of laughter out of it that's a good sign. Good luck.

Re: Can anyone suggest a name for my fiddle album?

Don't know why this came to me, but it's a play on words from a Sinatra tune. "i've got you, under my chin". I know... probably a stupid suggestion.

Or just name it after one of the tunes that you're recording. It would be even better if it was your own composition that you used the title for.

Re: Can anyone suggest a name for my fiddle album?

I go along with the stream of unconsciousness theory - was trying this for a new name for my band, many years ago. Went to bed, after writing down the names of American patchwork quilt patterns, there's quite a few evocative titles in there ( it was a hobby of my SO, and it's folky but a bit off the usual track ), woke up in the morning and said " T********t" which was a combination of two of these titles. It was years later when I discovered there was a Canadian band of that name, not much longer established than us.
Yes, write down all this stuff and then sleep on it.
I've played in both Wide-Eyed and Fretless, and Brute Force and Ignorance, so you can't have either of them........

There is an audience out there for that sort of ~ I won't say it, but I am definitely one who more appreciates the dirt of the auld ways with it, as survives in the Canadian Maritimes, like Cape Breton, and the out Isles, like the Shetlands, music that is still dancing and not strangled and muffled by too much starch and pomp. I can appreciated the twiddles and the fancy bowing and the 'control' and the tightness of it as a discipline, but that does nothing to warm the depths of my heart and soul.

Re: Can anyone suggest a name for my fiddle album?

Call me crazy, but I would worry about the quality of an album when the musician(s) involved doesn't have the creativity to come up with their own name.

Re: Can anyone suggest a name for my fiddle album?

Hey, I kind of agree, that the 'source' is the best place for a name, but humour the poor lad, it is his first effort, I suspect, so he is probably one hell of a bundle of nerves and can't think straight, not that all our jawing is going to help with him regaining balance and sanity. It is this coming weekend, he must be wettin' himself. ;-)

So, a bit of understanding and compassion Crysania, imagine yourself in a similar situation, you might just suffer a freeze on the creative juices. I know I'd be worried. I much prefer dancers in front to take off some of the heat, and to add to the warmth. But a studio, and having worked up to actually doing this, the poor lad. I wish him all the best. I do agree with you and a few others though, Iain, you would be best to just invite your closest and dearest family and or freinds over for a barbie and a drink and have a round table idea fest, writing every silly little thing down, and then, sleeping on it, and coming back. All the silliness I've added is really there just as fodder for ideas, with the hopes you'll find the seed for your title in your own heart, or maybe something from the madness will lodge there and in your hands and mind will find something that fits you and the situation...

Good luck ~ 'c'

Re: Can anyone suggest a name for my fiddle album?

I've been in similar situations with naming compositions and sure, sometimes it's difficult to come up with just the right name. But since it's my personal project and my creative output, I feel like it's my responsibility to come up with a name.

And really -- as far as catchy names go? Who cares? Many of the great's first albums were either self-titled or just "Traditional music of Ireland." And they're still great albums a lot of people buy.

Re: Can anyone suggest a name for my fiddle album?

Decide what mood you want to evoke, and name it appropriately. If it sounds very much like a session, call it "At the Pub," "Tunes in the Back Room," or something like that. I have a couple of names I particularly like, and have never seen, but will keep them to myself for potential future use (ha ha).
Interesting note--I have been told that titles are one thing that cannot be copyrighted in the US, I guess someone wisely decided that there are only so many short phrases to go around.

I still think he should make a party of it and invite a select few who know him and can contribute something with more meaning than any of us detatched digital instances can... Think of the craic, good company, some music, good food and drink ~ and being able to relax your guard amongst folks who care about you. What better way to free up those creative juices and get past this blockage...
