Most sessions take a "here we are, come find us" approach to getting new members, which is great if you live in large population centers. It's not so hot if you live in the sticks.
Have any of you ever tried "recruiting" players from local college music programs? If so, how has it worked out?
Boston being a great college town as well as a major center of Irish music, there are certainly any number of talented students who frequent the sessions. At one I'd been going to pretty regularly, college students often made up about half of the musicians present. Really liked the energy and enthusiasm they brought to the event.
Unfortunately, college students -- unless they live in town permanently -- are only around in the fall, part of winter and part of spring. And then eventually they have to go and graduate, and chances are they'll leave for good. Damn 'em!
Recruiting?
