Whistle recordings

Whistle recordings

Hi, before I get to my question, just wanted to say that I have been a member for a couple months now and though I haven't engaged in any discussions up until this moment, I think the website is terrific and has facilitated me becoming a true ITM fanatic. In any case, I've recently took up the whistle and am looking for great recordings of whistle players. Don't really have much in my musical library and feel it's fairly imperative if I'm ever going to really play this hunk of tin. So, does anyone know of any recordings that prominently feature whistle players? Preferably solo or with little accompianment. And if you can't think of a specific recording, just giving me a few choice names of whistle players would put me well on me way. Thanks.

Joanie Madden NY
Cherish the Ladies NY
Sean Ryan, Galway
Joe Mckenna, Dublin
Seamus Egan, SOLAS
There are more great players, than there are popular recordings.

Re: Whistle recordings

Brid O' Donohue is one of the best I have ever heard. Her album is called " Tobar on Ouchais"....she is a fairly simple ( I use that phrase lightly) but a very tastefull whistle player, awesome CD.

Re: Whistle recordings

Funny how the same names always seem to appear when any newbie makes such a posting on this subject!

Yep, Bergin, Russell, Madden, McKenna, etc. are great, but I'd have to take a rain cheque re. McHale (and it's utterly pointless recommending it since Outlet bit the dust a couple of years ago). The McDermott and 'Totally Tin Whistle' albums are also out of print.

One superb album of whistling is Gavin Whelan's eponymous debut. Then there are the the Lunasa lads and plenty of sublime whistling on Cran's four CDs.

Re: Whistle recordings

Gavin Whelan is a fine whistler. And I would agree big time with Lawrence Nugent - truly amazing style.

And to hear what you can do with a Susato then Sean Ryan from tipperary is yer man.

Re: Whistle recordings

Most of Grey Larsen's recordings feature whistle on about 1/3 to 1/2 of the tracks (the rest is flute):

"Dark of the Moon" and "The Green House" are both good.

His instructional books also include CDs with recordings, and he's got a "Tune Bank" where you can purchase individual recordings with notes and sheet music.

Re: Whistle recordings

Check your sources ~ the Josie McDermott recording has long been available as a CD... And just this year I know someone who managed to get their hands on the "Totally Tin Whistle" recording. There are also two McHale's with recordings and they have been available too. Besides, you can always chase up an old whistler or fluter who has a copy for a listen and to make your own decision on what you like... The lists given cover a wide range of styles, just to be democratic about it. It is the listen and education of the ears, and personal preferences, that eventually lead you your own way GW. I don't see harm in 'repetition' ~ keeping the spirit of response as fresh as the inquiry. Yeah, some of us are getting a bit long in the tooth, so if you really want a moan, start up a discussion for old farts and compare war wounds...

Personally GW, I can't stand Lunasa, but I don't have a problem with admitting that's a personal and highly biased opinion...but I wouldn't throw water on someone else's fire for that way with things... One can't deny their talents and dexterity...

Re: Whistle recordings

Thanks everybody for the responses. I just got some Mary Bergin. She's outta control. And I love Micho Russell too. I'll be tracking down the others. Nice thing is there's never a dearth of talent to soak up.

Re: Whistle recordings

Burke makes nice whistles too...

Excuse my rattiness with GW ~ Lunasa are extremely talented musicians... I shouldn't have taken my ire out on his recommendation... :-/

Re: Whistle recordings

I dont have any fancy links but check out

The Kells, they're the reason i bought a whistle

# Posted on August 20th 2006 by Spencer, Pipes

Re: Whistle recordings

spencer - the kells was the link i was referring to on burke's site. the reason i didnt say it was because brian mccoy is my uncle and i didnt want to sound so biased so i went with larry nugent.

# Posted on August 28th 2006 by daiv

Re: Whistle recordings

correction: let me correct myself. my previous message seems to say i settled for larry. in fact i meant to say that instead of suggesting "brian mccoy and larry nugent" i left out my uncle until he was mentioned by someone else because i am too biased.
