John Walsh

John Walsh

I've been playing some polkas by John Walsh for a long time now . They are great dance tunes and they have a great kick to them.
However, I don't know anything about the composer/ musician and just wondered if anyone had information about the man. They really feel like box tunes, so I'm assumung that he's a box player. Also, they have great lift and kick to them, so I'm sure he must be a player for dancers.
I've heard Johnny O'Leary play his tunes , as well as Jackie Daly and Monks of the Screw, and there's a great recording of Connie O'Connell and Denis McMahon playng his polkas. Obviously, he must be a Sliabh Luachra musician.

Can anyone give me any more information or anecdotes ?
Maybe you knew him or played with him,or danced to his music. Is he still playing or does he belong to an older generation?
Look forward to hearing from you.

Re: John Walsh

John comes to Miltown Malbay, so I've met him there a number of times. He is a slender, good-looking man with grey hair: 60-ish?. He usually listens in on the Kerry session at the Westbridge. He is a mad dancer who loves to have fun. He is a fiddler, and he plays in Scully's in Newmarket with Tim Connors (of the Monks) from time to time. If you'd like a photo, email me.

Re: John Walsh

Thanks for the reply, fiddlercjp.

I was way off the mark with my feeling that he was a box player!
And that explains why some of his tunes turn up on MOTS cds.
Cheers.

Re: John Walsh

Mr Sheehan,
In regards to John Walsh, the accordion player... it could only be john G. Walsh of claddagh records. Name of the album is the "magpie's nest." Which by the way is not included the forum here on the session. I will have to add that soon. Very surprised it is not on here already when there is some other stuff that is so questionable. I believe that Walsh comes from around Connemara area but I might be mistaken. His style would compliment that theory.
There is also a collector, sheet music writer from the 1700s with the same name.

And if you are out there John G. Walsh of "magpies nest," it is high time you give us another. c'mon claddagh!
