Greetings! (and a couple questions...)

Greetings! (and a couple questions...)

Hi All,
First of all, I'm pretty new here and I just have to say that I love this site. It's a brilliant idea, and it's great to have links between the tunes and recordings, and comments for everything. Very well done!

Now on to some questions - I'm trying to get into recording lately and I'm not sure what equiptment I need. For those of you that record on your computers, do you use external mixers? Right now I have the option to buy a Phonic Helix 12 Mixer at a pretty good discount, and it looks like a handy piece of equiptment.

I would also like to buy a nice mic, but I don't know where to start there. Any recommendations for a good fiddle mic under $200? It'll be used just for recording, not for gigs.

Also, another post recently pointed out the existence of http://www.whistlethis.com/, a forum for learning tunes on the whistle. Does anything like this exist for fiddlers?

Thanks everyone! I'll contribute tunes and recordings as soon as I find something that isn't already covered. The database here is amazing.

Re: Greetings! (and a couple questions...)

We need somebody to create "FiddleThis.com"
Any bored fiddler-webmaster?

Re: Greetings! (and a couple questions...)

Either that or we try a hostile takover of whistlethis. ;)

Re: Greetings! (and a couple questions...)

Welcome, Nathan. I just picked up a new Behringer UB802 mixer for a mere 65 bucks, and it seems to work very well for home recording. It also has phantom power, which would be handy for some of the condenser mics that others will probably recommend. (Me, I use an old AKG headset mic clipped to the chinrest. Works well enough for me, although it does pick up some bumps and breath noises. For serious recording, you should put the mic on a stand.)

Re: Greetings! (and a couple questions...)

I'm currently looking into some options to start a fiddlethis.com ... that's one of the coolest and best ideas I've come across on the 'Net in a long time!

I'll keep you posted!

Re: Greetings! (and a couple questions...)

I use the MBox Factory setup from Digidesign. It includes Pro-Tools LE and a 2 channel USB-attached Mic/instrument input.

The great thing about this setup is the relatively low cost (I got it and a 250 GB external hard drive for my recorded files at Sweetwiter.com) for about $750. It makes my junky AKG and Audio-technica mics (bought for less than $100 a piece back in the day) sound great.

Good luck with fiddlethis.com

Re: Greetings! (and a couple questions...)

Hi
I have been using a USB device to record into the computer in combination with a AKG C1000s Mike, the sound quality is OK but i recently got a M-Audio Firewire Solo and the sound quality is now fantastic.
I think the increase in sound quality is down to the high sampling rate (96K) the USB is only 48K. I mainly record fiddle and guitar and the improvement in sound quality shows mainly on the fiddle..
Good Luck
Mike

Has everybody forgotten about Jim Dorans' site?

OK, it's not the same thing, but it is a great site to learn from.

Re: Greetings! (and a couple questions...)

Actually, aren't the whistle tunes also playable on the fiddle ?
I'm sure I remember someone playing whistle alongside a fiddle once or twice......

GP, You know, come to think of it, I have noticed that as well......

Re: Greetings! (and a couple questions...)

Guernsey Pete - haha, true, I was wondering what type of response I would get if I just recorded a fiddle track and uploaded it there. It seems like their intent is to keep the focus on the whistle, but they do have a fiddle on their front page 'banner'.

Re: Greetings! (and a couple questions...)

Hmm, okay, so here's my next question: I see that the $50 Behringer UB802 has phantom power, a preamp, and is 24-bit. What would the motivation for getting the MBox which costs $350? What does that extra $300 improve?

thanks much!

Re: Greetings! (and a couple questions...)

I sent the whistlethis.com webmaster a question about letting other instruments join.

He said he wasn't a nazi about it, but he did want to keep the focus on whistles.

Still looking into things....

Re: Greetings! (and a couple questions...)

The extra money for the Mbox includes the ProTools LE software and various plug ins that you can apply to process the sound. The factory bundle also comes with a "Using ProTools LE" DVD that helped me with the learning curve of the software.

I record full arrangements with multiple instruments one track at a time, and the 48 tracks on ProTools LE is likely more than I'll ever use.
