Highlights:
-The session in the basement of the dorm on Friday night
-Playing with all sorts of talented folks in nightly sessions.
-John Skelton's playing at the monday night concert
-Free ice cream
-Forgetting about mundane life for a little while
Haha, yes I am(sorta) young....no I paid full tuition, I might try for a scholarship next year though- I WILL BE BACK!!!!!
Nope, no pics~left the camera at home, damn it!
How did everybody else like it? It's really the highlight
of my year.
My roommate/gf got a bunch of pictures, but I don;t know if/when they will be posted.
More highlights:
1) The Breton pinky dance at the end of the tuesday ceili
2) "Theremin Thursday."
3) Playing in small sessions with a very accomplished, creative harp player.
4) Shameless name dropping: Kevin Crawford told me I had a good crann
5) Bushmills in wee doses
6) Jamesons in wee doses
The focus of Swannanoa is, for the hardcore types, the sessions and the concerts. The classes often have around 15 students, so individual feedback was pretty rare. But there were enough pearls of wisdom strewn about that they were well worth it.
I went last summer (2005) and have continued to improve over the year by practicing the things I learned in those classes. It was a great experience. The only reasons I didn't go back were the two minor details of time and money, especially coming from CA, but I would highly recommend it. Many of the same teachers returned, and I suspect will be there next summer as well.
Ooh Ooh, I was there (on scholarship this year, but I've been twice before paying).
I took Julee Glaub's, Jerry Holland's, And Patrick Mangan's classes...they were all awesome!
For a high school student who plays classical and "contemporary educational" (blegh!) all year (but am definitely a fiddler!) it's always a nice break, haha.
I got some pictures, but nothing interesting, I was too focused on music. (by nothing interesting, I really mean it. I think the best picture was one of the new blinds that were randomly installed in my/my roommate's room during the week.)
Does anybody here have painted toenails (I guess that's more from a song session, since I'm a singer too...)but just in case!
Yes, we definitely painted toenails again this year...I brought the polish! Along with my roommate and another lady...we had a selection (mostly of blue)...some interesting stories there...well I porbably know you then, if you painted your toenails...
Did you get ANY good photos? I really wish I'd brought the camera!!! so is there anyone esle who was at swannanoa here??? It was sooooo much fun; had way too much elephant....
Well do ya remember that lady; on the first day of classes she was like"do have the music for these tunes?" and Jerry was like"not a chance!" pretty funny for me, as an ear learner but she COULDN'T get the tunes so she just stopped even taking her fiddle out during class! At least that other guy, when he was having trouble, was good humored about it!!
oh yeah, I remember her...that's her problem if she's going to be mad about that...it's how the music is (supposed to be) learned...not that I have room to talk as a music reader but I mean...the other guy (I wish I could remember his name, he was in my other class too lol) was being great...its all in how you look at things (I believe he contributed to the OD on elephant line...)
Yeah, actually Mary was talking about that too.. I don't think she'll be able to go though are you gonna go? I dunno, I've already done a lot of driving and traveling this summer... I'll see. when is it?
There are some great pictures of this year's Celtic Week taken by one of the roving photographers, Laura Shmania. You can have a look at them at http://butterflites.smugmug.com/Events/212292
This year was my first time at the Gathering, and I had a great time. It took me a day or so to realize that the real learning experiences, as wormdiet said, were not so much the courses as the evening sessions and concerts.
By the way, what's the deal with the "elephant"? (Maybe I DID miss something by going to bed early that one night....)
Warren Wilson This past week.
Warren Wilson This past week.
Hi, I was just wondering if anyone attended the Warren Wilson College camp this past week in North Carolina? If so, how did you like it?
