Fiddle Obsession CDs

Fiddle Obsession CDs

I thought I'd float the idea and solicit comments and suggestions.

I have focused my documentary CD projects so far on Irish flute players. See http://www.worldtrad.org for the details about those first 3 volumes.

I've been asked by some supporters to explore doing similar non-profit compilations of archive and new recordings for other instruments. Generally, it seems, I operate these projects somewhat by public hearing, so I'm looking for input as to whether such a project is of interest to listeners, and fiddle players (essential for participation).

Please provide your opinions on whether I should really go ahead and start pestering fiddlers for recordings, and if you can, supply candidates to consider and (by email probably), any contact info to make it feasible to solicit their involvement.

Thanks,

Kevin Krell

Re: Fiddle Obsession CDs

Great idea, but there are definitely more fiddlers than wooden flute players in the world, so you need to narrow down the candidate list first. I think it'd be nice to focus on Irish style fiddlers at the start. Otherwise, the list would be too long.

Re: Fiddle Obsession CDs

Sounds like an outstanding idea. I agree with slainte, concentrate on Irish traditional fiddlers. Evan with that you'll have a hard time making your selections. When can I place my order? :-)

Re: Fiddle Obsession CDs

Kevin, I think it is a good idea and there are certainly a huge number of fiddle-lovers out there.
As Slainte said there are an awful lot of fiddlers out there, so I think you would have to narrow your criteria down somewhat for this project. Maybe aim for older fiddlers who have not been recorded, or fiddlers from a certain region (e.g. UK or Australia or even USA :) ), or even make it all fiddle duets รก la Kane sisters. These are probably silly examples, but I hope you sort of get my drift.

Re: Fiddle Obsession CDs

I agree that a selection for fiddle or pipes would have a tremendous number of candidates. I like the mix of the old and new, well-known and relatively unknown, the absent friends and the new friends. I don't think it's possible to be encyclopedic. Limit on a 2-CD set is roughly 40 tracks. Even if I tried to assemble 2 volumes at once it's 80 tracks/fiddlers. One process of elimination is who's available, who's willing, etc. If anyone's tied to a big label, they may not even have the freedom to participate even if the wanted to. Right now, I'm exploring whether the musicians and their fans think it's a silly, impractical, unwanted idea, or otherwise. I neither want to outwear whatever welcome I might have, nor become the object of controversy, as some collectors have been.

Re: Fiddle Obsession CDs

If they are tied to a label then there is no need to get them as people can hear them easily if they want. What would be interesting is to hear people who are talented but might otherwise not be heard beyong their local session/village.
No I don't think the idea is silly.

Re: Fiddle Obsession CDs

I agree with Donough on several accounts...unrecorded musicians that might not ever get the chance to be heard. I would not be interested in recycled hits, or in established artists, unless they were in interesting combinations. Also, an emphasis on unaccompanied music would be best.

Donough & Jode,
Sounds like a possible plan for keeping it manageable.

Re: Fiddle Obsession CDs

I would love to have a compilation of great players who aren't necessarily "big names".

Re: Fiddle Obsession CDs

Personally, I wouldn't mind some big names, and no-names, just as long as the music is good. A well played tune, even if it is a standard, widely known tune, by someone who has mastered it and their instrument, is a pleasure to hear whenever you listen.

On the other hand, a mediocre tune by a bad player...

Go for it, Kevin! If it turns out anything like your WFO (Wooden Flute Obsession) Series, you're doing great! Can't wait to hear it!
