Jigs anyone?

Jigs anyone?

I realised that I basically only know reels. Does anyone know the names of some cool jigs?

Re: Jigs anyone?

I was feeling self-conscious about learning mostly reels recently. Talking about it with someone else in our session, he commented that he had played at a session regularly at which other people did not like to play reels, so he's wanted to play lots of reels ever since.

A few of my favorites: Rose in the Heather, Apples in Winter, White Petticoat, Tobin's Favorite, Irishman's Heart to the Ladies.

We tend to play Jump at the Sun as well as Calliope House a bit. Also Princess Nancy

Slip jig--I've been playing the Boys of Ballysodare a lot recently.

Re: Jigs anyone?

Willie Coleman's, The Swedish Jig, the Thirty Year Jig, Timmy Clifford's, A Short Journey I and II, The Jig Runrig, Tripping Up the Stairs, Professor Delbert's Birthday, Pancake Tuesday, James O'Byrne's, Stan Chapman's, Tom Busby's, Monaghan's, Kilavil, and Have a Drink on Me. That'll do for starters.

Re: Jigs anyone?

My favourite jigs would be piper's jigs. Among them: I Buried my Wife and Danced on Top of her Grave, Pipe on the Hob No. 1 and 2, Humours of Ballyloughlin, Luck Penny, Garrett Barry's, Hag's Purse, Hag at the Churn, Hag with the Money, Oh Hag You have killed me and Walls of Liscaroll.

Aside from Piper's jigs I love: The Killavil, Cliffs of Moher, Humours of Ennistymon, Dan the Cobbler, Coleman's (The Promenade), Tenpenny Bit, Phil's Jig, Willie Coleman's and Mist Covered mountain.

There's lot's more and it's all to do with personal preferance. Keep searching around for jigs and when you find one YOU like, go and learn it. There's a whole database here to look in so just leave the search engine blank and choose jigs in the drop down. If there's any preferred key, choose it, and by the way, piper's jigs are most commonly in Dmix.

Re: Jigs anyone?

Bannerman, did you write the Fionn Seisun books or something? You really like to plug the sets don't you?

Re: Jigs anyone?

Only half guilty this time Dow as the Old Kilfenora/Club Céilí/Jim Wards are not a Foinn Seisiún set, although they would have made a great one!

Re: Jigs anyone?

Went to Corofin - wall to wall reels hour after hour. We set up an alternative session where only jigs, hornpipes and polkas were played which went down well with the old-timers - the youngsters just wanted reels.
