Michael Vignoles Bodhrans

Michael Vignoles Bodhrans

As the menacing rip in the skin of my ultra-cheap bodhran widens in the summer humidity, I have no choice but to turn my eyes towards the purchase of a new, "real" bodhran. Unfortuanately, my price range is much smaller than I would like. If I were in the right mood I might spend around $200 dollars, but even that is higher than I would like. I know, I know, if I really were serious I would spend the money and get a good drum...

All that being said, I was wondering if y'all had any thoughts on Michael Vignoles' Bodhrans, or if you could recommend other "real" bodhrans that wouldn't be too expensive.

Thanks much.

Re: Michael Vignoles Bodhrans

Just got the 18" deep rim, "deluxe pro" tunable one for about GBP 80.00 on ebay. It was a "make an offer " on one that lists for about GPB 180 - so I got it for way less than that including shipping to US from UK. Came with a reasonably nice soft case.

lovely, just lovely - great rich voice - I get the point of having a tunable one now. Can't say that I ever had the impulse to tune the cheap one i used to have.

Re: Michael Vignoles Bodhrans

Check out http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/Bodhrandojo/ and search the archives with Michael’s name and you will find reviews of his bodhráns. If you go to the links section of this group you will find a number of makers listed with their web sites and again if you search the archives with their names you will most likely turn up a review or two of their bodhráns. I do not own one of Mr. Vignoles’ drums but have played a few over the years and his drums are good and worthy of playing in the most accomplished of circles. My personal preference would be other makers but these bodhráns would be well past your stated price range.

Dave Settles http://www.daveydrums.com/ is another fine maker that may have a model or two closer to your price range than other makers.

Oh and by the way Mr. Gill in reverse, seeing as it has been a while since we’ve chided one another, there are those that take great pleasure and satisfaction from the simple accompaniment of the music. I know I do. I know this may be a strange concept for you but the reason there are as many types of bicycles in the world as there are is simply that different folks need or prefer different spokes.

Peace,
Ed

Re: Michael Vignoles Bodhrans

I have one that is not only a first rate instrument but beautiful and a pleasure to own. Michael comes every February to the Savannah Irish Fest and he's also a wonderful person. I highly recommend his work.

Hoorah indeed, this is good for this person. Notice up that until now non who solely or otherwise accompany the music offered any sarcastic comments in the referenced discussion. Shows who the tolerant really are I suppose. Thanks for pointing it out.

Good to see you active again albeit backwards.

Peace,
Ed

Re: Michael Vignoles Bodhrans

I would highly recommend a M.V. bodhran. I 've had one for 5 yrs...
He is also a wonderful pipe maker. If you want a good drum thats going to last your going to have to save a little.
GO ON with it, its so worth it in the long run.

Re: Michael Vignoles Bodhrans

I've got one that I bought a few months ago--love it. Living in an area where the humidity goes from cold dry to steaming soggy, I am really pleased with the tunable Vignoles.

(Hi, Ed!)
