The "less far" road to Sligo...

The "less far" road to Sligo...

Hi, people! In september, I'm moving from Spain to Sligo ir order to study the entire academic year in the Institute of Technology. I'm fiddler and I'd like to get some recommendations about irish music there (sessions, people to meet, etc.) In the same way, if somebody can talk me about acommodations or anything I must know, please, give me the way to contact him (it is an irish music site; I don't want to introduce an offtopic discussion). Thank you and keep playing!

Re: The "less far" road to Sligo...

Sligo is definately one of the best and most relaxed places in Ireland to have a tune. Look out for the excellent fiddler Ray coen. Accomodation should be easy. Getting into the music circle should be a good way of accessing affordable accomodation as the trad crew know the best places in town.
Have enjoyed some of the best sessiuns in Sligo and the surrounding countryside. In India at the moment looking forward to getting back for a tune in July

For a comprehensive info, check this site: http://homepage.eircom.net/~fredfinn/Home.html

The most well-known session pub in Sligo town is Furey's Sheela-na-Gig on Bridge St. There are some other regular sessions too. You should meet Sheila O'Dowd and Veronica Ryan during your stay, they are both great old-fashioned fiddle players: http://homepage.eircom.net/~fredfinn/fleadh2005_cont.htm

If you get to Gurteen (Coleman's hometown) try to find Peter Horan- a real gentleman and fine, old fashioned, fiddler and fluter.
Sessions at Teach Murray ( I think)

The Yeats Student homes are straight across the road from the Institute of Technology. Check out the website www.yeatsvillage.ie These are really nice homes and no doubt you will get to mix with loads and loads of other friendly students there.
