Back from CIAW! Come on in!

Back from CIAW! Come on in!

Hi gang!
I haven't been on the board or posted in ages. We got back last night from a fantastic week in East Durham. For those of you who went -- what were some of your favorite times? Where did you stay and how were your accomodations? If my husband John and I met you, hello again! If not, hello still and we hope to meet you next year!

Re: Back from CIAW! Come on in!

I am so depressed to be back from CIAW. I'm totally wiped out as well! It was such a great week with some terrific tunes. I was fortunate to be one of the instructors so I was lucky enough to be compensated for the great time I had!!! I had a great ceili with Joanie Madden, Liz Kane, Linda Hickman, Brendan and Felix, Jimmy Kelly and Chris Droney to start the week off right, I had seisuns with just about all the other teachers and loved hearing them play in the concerts. I recommended this week to quite a few people who thanked me for the great time they had as well. Could I pick the best seisun?--probably not--they were all great. Lots of laughs as well.

Re: Back from CIAW! Come on in!

Hi Mary. I met you and John last week (Stacy, the red-headed fiddle/flute player from the boarding house). Favorite times: Hmm - there were so many it's hard to say. It's kind of all a blur in my mind right now (or maybe that's the Guinness still doing its trick). I think meeting so many great people of all ages who share the same obsession was pretty awesome and the nearly-24-hours-a-day music was pretty amazing too. Accomodations: The Shamrock Boarding House. Yikes! Never seen so many moths or such disgusting carpeting! But even though it's a real flea-bag I'll probably stay there next year. The atmosphere was so friendly, the place is central and the food included in the already cheap price is hard to beat. A bed is a bed, right?

I think I'm going to need at least a week to recover.

Stacy from Brooklyn
P.S. This is my first post (or maybe 2nd) here though I've been lurking for ages.

Re: Back from CIAW! Come on in!

Hi there!
Stacy - yep. I know exactly who you are : ) Nice to "see' you again. We stayed in the boarding house during our first visit two years ago and I swore then that it would be the last time. But we were late in making reservations this year and you're right, with the food included, you can't beat the price and so we did it again. It's never as bad as I make it out to be in my head and I guess you can say it keeps me on my toes as i am forever on the lookout for "nature" inside the house and I do a mad dash down the hallways coming and going. We kept saying, justl like you "it's a place to sleep." We love being near to everything and have come to love the people who run the place and well, I kinda feel a sense of loyalty to it now! I'd feel bad going anywhere else lol. That said, we will most likely get an upgrade next year. Still staying at the Shamrock House but in one of the motel units.

It was a fantastic week. We're heading to the pub where we play tonight and even though I'm exhausted and part of me wants to just go home and crash, another part of me wants to see the rest of the gang (some of whom were with us at CIAW) and also try out playing some new tunes! The seisuns were just fantastic up there and I agree with you too-- seeing all those people with a passion for it, from all over the world and all ages, it's truly an amazing thing!

Fiddlefamily -- greetings from someone born and raised in Rockland! (Suffern to be exact). I'll be heading back up to NY this weekend for a family function. Hate to get on the road again but oh well! Which level class did you teach? That's so great that you were able to share your gift with the students and enjoy the company of all those great instructors!

Re: Back from CIAW! Come on in!

Hey Mary
I'm from Pearl River and I taught beginner fiddle class. I had a great bunch of students and ended up teaching them some tunes that weren't exactly beginner tunes. Hi to Jim and Dave, Delores, John, Maggie, Meghan,Ilene, Marianne and all the kids in the class too. I'm sad to be home (doing all the laundry that's piled up!!)

Re: Back from CIAW! Come on in!

Hel0o0o!

Got back and sad to be back! I'm still on a sessioning streak though... there was a session Sunday when I got back, one today and one more tomorrow! I'm excited =P

highlights... Stack's Pub was the place to be, and meeting and having the pleasure of playing with John Daly almost every night at some point. Such a nice guy and a Hell of player as well! And well, basically the entire week was a highlight.

And fiddlefamily, if you're the Rose I'm thinking about, you're one Hell of a fiddler, and so are your kid/s =] and brother. Nice playing with you if you're that Rose! [Flanagan?]

Cheers,
Armand

Re: Back from CIAW! Come on in!

Fiddlefamily, if you are the Rose I am thinking of too, we were honored last year to have your brother play at our wedding in Suffern. It was a joy to see and hear him again!

Take care,

Mary

Re: Back from CIAW! Come on in!

Hi, all. Wow- what a week, a nirvana-esque experience. I described it to a friend who wasn't lucky enough to be there as "play, play, play, lessons, practice, lessons, practice, listen, listen, play, play and a little sleep." Definitely going next year.
I took Joanie's advanced whistle and Damien Connolly's intermediate accordion. Both wonderful classes, wonderful teachers, wonderful tunes. My favorite session has to be the intermediate one that was led by Damien C., Benedict Koehler and Brendan Dolan- just a great rhythmic experience. I have a new appreciation for harp after hearing Michael Rooney! Concerts, slow sessions, and listening rooms were all super.
I stayed at Stack's (Hi, Armand- still working on Sarah Hobb's!). Was pretty much OK, and I've already made arrangements to stay at the Blackthorne next year. Can't wait. And now back to accordion practice!

Sleep! What is this "sleep" you talk of and what does it have to do with East Durham? ;)

Hi Rose! Great playing on saturday :)
Oh well, back to lurking

Re: Back from CIAW! Come on in!

I got at least five hours of sleep every night, but it wasn't voluntary.

Hi Rose! Sorry to burst into your bedroom at the crack of 9:50 Monday morning.

Re: Back from CIAW! Come on in!

Another great week/year!

And, the Shamrock Boarding House rocks...er, reels! ;) I felt I was back in college, and for one week, it was manageable. They even put fans in the room this year! It is a great bargain, and location, in medias res. And the owners are very friendly, appreciative, and helpful.

Stacy, nice meeting you, and I hope them flying thingies didn't put you off too much!

Loved having a week of classes with Catherine McEvoy on flute. And it was an extra bonus to hear Patrick Olwell's lecture and to get to try his own and some antique flutes. And then John Gallagher stopped by our class with his batch to try.

So much to do, so little time. I only took the one class this year so that I'd have time to practice and still get out.

I now feel energized and motivated--if only I could be in such a great music community all the time. Guess you got to keep the Catskills spirit going inside...until the next year.

Rose, sorry we didn't get to play. And, you sounded great on Saturday!

Re: Back from CIAW! Come on in!

Hi Mike, et al:

It was nice meeting you too. I guess I can live with the flying thingies so long as they flitter around the lights and stay away from me! Despite its shabbiness, I feel a strange affection for the boarding house...

Yes, it was like being back in college again! But at my age, I think 1 day more might have killed me! Taking one class was wise. There really was no time to practice otherwise. And Catherine was great! I have a recorder full of tunes to learn and wish I were home pracicing right now instead of slacking off at work.

See you at Dempsey's when I get up the nerve!

Re: Back from CIAW! Come on in!

Hi Everyone!
We're just back from a week of recovery at our cottage in north Ontario, but what a great week we had! My husband Dave doesn't usually like workshops but thankyou, Rose, for making it great. He's still raving about it . Damian Connolly is great, too. Yes, the Shamrock House is a fleabag but we rebooked, so it couldn't have been that bad. The Sliabh Luachra session on Friday at Furlong's was the icing on the cake - a fantastic way to end a great week. All the people we met made the trip extra special, so to Robin and Delores, see you next year. I may have my new tunes down by then.
Cheers, Heather

Re: Back from CIAW! Come on in!

I feel like I'm in withdrawal from thinking of nothing but ITM from dawn 'til -- dawn. Michael Rooney's harp workshops were great - I just need time now to absorb it all! Just fantastic being with others who are as hooked as I am - the concerts were great, sessions everywhere - came back too exhausted to make it to the Sunday night session in Red Bank but made it up to hear Jackie Daly and Paul DeGrae at IAANJ in Rockaway NJ last Friday and have a session afterwards. Is it next year yet?
