Watching the new Solas DVD a noticed Séamus Egan was wearing some sort of metal frame on his 4th finger, left hand, while playing the flute. Any of ye's know the reason for this??
Hope he aint losing his touch! ? ?

Re: egan

It sure doesn't sound like he's losing his touch!

I wondered that exact same thing -- it looked like something medical so I thought maybe he might have injured it. But really, I'm not sure why he was wearing it (and only when playing flute -- he didn't when playing banjo).

Re: egan

Crysania; fair enough, obviously he hasn't "lost his touch".
But I do think his flute playing was better on the 1998 dvd, and he played more of it.
Definetly a brilliant player but!!..wouldnt go as far as calling him a god..

Re: egan

Hi guys,

Seamus came to Japan last December and I had a chance to talk with him.

I asked about the metal thing on his finger, and he said he uses it because he has windpuffs and it hurts when he plays the flute. He said it is easier for him to play the string instruments due to the pain. Apparently that is the reason why he doesn’t play the flute so much nowadays.

I hope his finger will get better so that I can hear his flute.

Windpuffs?????

Re: egan

I went and looked up windpuffs. Apparently it's an affliction that affects, of all things, HORSES.

An affliction of horses marked by a collection of synovial fluid between the tendons of the legs, particularly just above the fetlock joint, the prominence appearing on both sides of the tendon; most common in hard-worked animals and may end in lameness.

Odd.

Re: egan

Looks like it is probably a repetitive motion thing to me, the bane of many musician's existance.
