RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication" and is simply a way of getting the latest stuff to the reader. Like "Breaking News" headlines from CNN or whatever.
You need a RSS reader and a link to an RSS feed. A summary of the latest stuff is displayed in your RSS reader and you can decide whether to follow the link to the full article.
On this site, if you click on Tunes or Recordings or Sessions, the page displays a tab called "New" which shows the latest additions. This is basically what the RSS feed supplies.
The next question is why on earth would anybody want that?
Well, instead of wasting time going to all your bookmarked sites looking for new stuff, only to find that it has not been updated, or you go there and find that it has been updated with things that you have now missed, the RSS feed will let you know the moment something happens. While newsletters are only published weekly or monthly or whatever and are often blocked by spam filters, the RSS feed is instant and does not go through e-mail.
Why would you want it?
Because it brings the discussions to you rather than you having to go the discussions
I have it set up on Firefox as a ticker that scrolls in a discreet toolbar at the foot of the browser pane. Click an item to get the full story. You can get the one I use here https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2325/
I am sure you will find similar offerings for other browsers
You will find RSS feeds from all sorts of web sites that you want to stay current on. If a favorite site does not have a feed, and if the web site guy is as smart as Jeremy, RSS can be easily added. (That was pretty shameless huh?)
Ok - a bit off topic, but I've installed the recommended thing to firefox and found some sites with RSS feeds but can't work out how to add RSS feeds to it and view them in Firefox. Any suggestions?
Took me a moment to figure - but navigate to the session home page, click the discussions tab, then click the little orange symbol in the right hand side of the address bar.
Sorry about the lack of a full description for the install.
Tips:
* Click the scrolling item to open the full article
* Hover over the article to see a short summary of the item's content
* Right click an item to see a bunch of additional options to manage the feed from that site.
In firefox, go to the pull down menu "Tools/Extensions" to manage the ticker itself
For the record, I use the Sage RSS Reader extension in Firefox, and it's fantastic. No real extra software (besides the extension itself) and it works beautifully.
While one might be tempted to call RSS a time-saving device, it's really no more of a time saver than TiVo is.
Bookmarked sites are sites that you have saved a link to so you can more easily go back to them later. Most applications call it "bookmarks", but Internet Explorer calls it "Favorites".
Hey that's great - couldn't get it to work last week but it works this morning (using the reader from http://www.rssreader.com/ ) and it looks more like "work" on my pc too!
No discussion RSS?
No discussion RSS?
Is there a reason there doesn't appear to be an RSS feed for the discussions?

Re: No discussion RSS?
Read the FAQ. The answer is there.

I'm sorry, you are right.
So, is there a reason?

Re: No discussion RSS?
I guess I could add an RSS feed for the discussions area - I didn't think there was much call for it actually.
I'll look into adding one.

Re: No discussion RSS?
Time saver?
Heck no, just a more efficient way of wasting some time. Like woodworking power tools are a more efficient way of making sawdust.
