Re: Post pictures of our instruments (AKA Our children)
I' ll join Tag! I always wondered why people keep this kind of gear stuck on all the time, when it's 95% of your time or more when you don't need it, but it chokes your tone all the time...; and there are systems that easily can be removed when playing unplugged....
Re: Post pictures of our instruments (AKA Our children)
A word of support for you Irishfiddler.... I have the same pick-up. Looks like an LR Baggs style. It really doesn't affect the sound of the fiddle. It's a tiny wire built in to the bridge. I cut my connecting cord a little shorter, it doesn't touch the fiddle. It can be a shade heavier on the pick-up side when playing plugged in, but it works very well. I have tried many pick-ups and for playing professionally, I have not found better. It's not a great picture, but this is my fiddle: http://anastasiadesroches.com/myPictures/Chicks2.JPG
Re: Post pictures of our instruments (AKA Our children)
And by the way henk bos, most of the systems that are removable sound totally crap, so if your doing much professional playing (which you obviously arn't), then you need to have a good inbuilt pickup system. But you probably know my fiddle far better than me, being so knowledgable and all.
Re: Post pictures of our instruments (AKA Our children)
and you're not feeling superior at all, aren't you? If you're interested at all, I use a Fishman. The guys from Union Sation use them as well, and they aren't exactly ........ (fill in for yourself).

Well I want to join in with the original theme - here's my favourites: http://www.geocities.com/pifflegiffle/instruments.htm
I haven't put a picture of my bow on there as it would drive you all insane with jealousy (and it came free with a bashed-up old fiddle)
Re: Post pictures of our instruments (AKA Our children)
If your a pro you don't *need* a built in pickup system. Microphones are still the best. Even with a good built in system, you don't get the same tone that you get 6 inches to a foot away from the instrument. It's picking up the sound "too close". Acoustic instruments are made to project tone outwards, so that's where you capture it. Sure, running sound is a bit easier if you use pickups, but it'll never sound as true as mics.
Re: Post pictures of our instruments (AKA Our children)
Wow, a lot of um...responses! I've got the pick-up on there because I play in a jazz/rock band as well as Irish gigs. I agree, most pickups sound awful, but I got lucky on this one. It's an L.R. Baggs pickup and I had them custom fit the wire into a REALLY nice bridge. It's the best "electric" sound your going to get out of a fiddle IMO. I like mics to, but your confined to ONE space on stage. I like to roam. If I had my way I would never use any amplification, but you can't really do that with a band behind you. I have found that I don't like the tone I get from some PA systems . I don't like the sound I get when I go through them. That's why I go from my fiddle, to my good amp and THEN if I must, I go into the PA from my amp. I also use an LR Baggs pre amp, that helps a little.
Anna, I need to cut the little chord a little shorter on mine too. I gets in the way and when it touches anything, it gives me a buzz, but other than that, I love it!
Henk Bos, The pickups that are "removable" are usually junk. They don't hold up and they certainly don't give you near the same tone as say, an L.R Baggs would.
RichardB, your fiddle is pretty!
It's nice to see instruments AND the people who play them!!
Re: Post pictures of our instruments (AKA Our children)
My objection to the usual Baggs installation is not the pickup itself, which is pretty unobtrusive and has little detectacble affect on the tone, it's that gruesome 1/4" carpenter jack that everyone seems to use. Nothing associated with the word "carpenter" should ever be allowed on a musical instrument. Take a look at the minor mod I made for the Baggs installation on my fiddle. It's a 1/8" jack mounted into the tail of the chinrest. I use a right angle plug that doesn't get in the way and a very thin flexible lead down to the preamp at my belt.
You'll need to click on the pic of the fiddle to go to the enlarged photo to see it, which I guess illustrates the point that it's not so intrusive.
Re: Post pictures of our instruments (AKA Our children)
The fiddler I work with uses a clip-on mic that works pretty damned well... and he leaves the whole thing in his case when we aren't amplified. It clips onto his chin rest and the mic can be placed wherever you like. He usualy has it floating just above the f-hole or between that and the bridge.
Re: Post pictures of our instruments (AKA Our children)
This post is NOT about fiddle pickups.
Here is my lineup of accordions: http://www3.sympatico.ca/jkavanagh/5accordions.jpg
If you subtract the black Learner B/C and substitute for it a sweet little Castagnari Dinn II, that's my current collection.
Re: Post pictures of our instruments (AKA Our children)
ScottC, Do you not like 1/4'' because they are to heavy/get in the way? I don't like the 1/8'' jacks becuase they are not the most universal, that's all. Pretty fiddle BTW.
The Phantom Button, I'd like to know what kind of "clip" your friend is useing! Sounds interesting...
Re: Post pictures of our instruments (AKA Our children)
Nice pictures Judy! I think if anyone else want to comment on pickups we need to have pictures. Incidentally, anyone can open a free Geocities website and you get 15 Mb of space - just the thing to put your pick-up pictures on! http://geocities.yahoo.com/join/
Re: Post pictures of our instruments (AKA Our children)
I also use an AT35M clip on mic for both my fiddle and mandolin, it clips on the fiddle chinrest and the mando pickguard and I move it back and forth when switching instruments on stage. It does a much better job than a pickup but is a feedback demon in a noisy environment and requires MAJOR EQ to get rid of an annoying peak at 300 hz that all the clip ons I've tried seem to have.
I only paid $115US for it at Zzounds.com, so I guess that qualifies for "or less".
If you want the ultimate in an easy clip on mic solution, look here:

Hi Guys,
Instead of starting a new thread, does anyone know any links for instrument makers?
All help greatly appreciated!
