I'm wondering if there are any resources that can help identify different tunes that happen to share the same name.
This site is often good for giving alternate names for the SAME tune. However if it's a completely different tune with the same name that can be harder to identify.
For example, Mick O'Brien's album the May Morning Dew has a tune called Connaughtman's Rambles but it's not the same tune that we all know (or that's listed on this site). There are numerous other examples of course.
I know thesession.org is working on this but in the meantime...are there any other resources out there to help narrow down such things?
Well, as many people have pointed out, there are loads of misnamed tunes on famous recordings. For example, Lunasa spead recent compositions by someone else with totally incorrect titles. Altan recorded some Scots / Cape Breton tunes with obviously wrong titles, etc. etc... It seems this isn't new though.
And yes, there's no web resource with perfectly correct info about Irish tunes. "irishtune.info" is very neat, but even that site fails to identify a few tunes. And even "The Fiddler's Companion" contains not a few obviously incorrect pieces of information. We certainly need to help each other, reporting them.
I'm also guilty about posting some incorrect info on this site, but thankfully somebody else often point that out.
