New site section: Events

New site section: Events

Hi everyone,

I'm very pleased to announce the unveiling of a brand new part of The Session. We now have a section specifically for announcing upcoming events:

http://www.thesession.org/events/

This is kind of like the sessions section, but it is intended for one-off events like concerts, workshops, festivals and the like.

I've taken the liberty of adding some events that were previously announced here in the discussions section. From now on, you'll be able to post event announcements in the new section instead of here in discussions.

As always, I welcome your feedback. Let me know what you think.

Re: New site section: Events

It's really good, Jeremy, thanks. I particularly like the "search" facility. Here's a link to Runner's World Events section. You might get some ideas from that:
http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/defaultevents.asp?sp=&v=2
I see they do things like "Distance from Home" (but you have to provide a postcode.) Obviously "Surface" would be inappropriate to emulate, but maybe a drop-down menu for "type of event"? Just an idea. Then again, maybe the beauty of yours is in simplicity and ease of operation.

Re: New site section: Events

Yeah, it's complicated enough as it is. :-)

Mind you, I would like to make things a bit more personalised over time. I'm thinking about allowing members (from their profile) to state which country, area, and town they live in. Then I'd be able to provide targeted events and sessions.

That would take a fair bit of work though so it isn't likely to happen anytime soon.

Re: New site section: Events

Nice one Jeremy! A very good idea.

I wonder if there would be any merit in the notion of having a separate section too for 'Instruments for Sale'?
e.g. Paragon Banjos & the like?

Just thinking out loud, with my finger! :-)

Re: New site section: Events

Great. Always had trouble searching out whats going on (e.g. when planning a trip to Ireland) via 'discussions'.

Jeremy - youv'e done such a good job on this site - its very existence is now 'important' - so I've been wary of asking for more.

However ! - some basic boolean search possibilities would often have been very welcome. eg. the example above. Before this new section, finding up-coming events via basic search option 'discussions was pretty impossible !

Keep up the good work - (and then we'll want even more !)

Re: New site section: Events

Another thought: does your search facility use a 'fuzzy match' technique, and be thus tolerant of spelling mistakes, as in Lotus Domino, or do you have to be precise in your spelling?
I must say I prefer the former, but again I guess that would require more work.

Re: New site section: Events

Thanks Jeremy, this is great! Instruments for sale would be good too! One thing at a time....!

Re: New site section: Events

Well, just think Jeremy, you could perhaps charge a % commission every time an instrument was sold through your site! Just a thought.

Re: New site section: Events

Great! I hope this new section saves us some date entries under 'discussions'.

Re: New site section: Events

Wunnerful, wunnerful - oh, that comment belongs on the Lawrence Welk polka site, so I'll revise it -

Wonderful, Wonderful!

Re: New site section: Events

Don't suppose you could list the events chronologically, rather than in order of posting ?
Details, details, this site, I find, is so easy to navigate, having logged into a couple of others recently.
