Sligo Live? Sligo Dead, more like

Sligo Live? Sligo Dead, more like

Anyone else at the Sligo live? Brutal festival, if u could even call it that. Nobody in the town wanted to know about it. We walked around, venturing into and out of pubs. We were drinking all day, of course, but one publican who told us to go to his pub - foley's i think - refused us cos we were drinking already. I thought i was back in dublin for a moment.
And the festival grounds? There were no more than 100 people there on saturday night.
We went to donegal on sunday morning, to ballyshannon rory gallagher fest. Now that was a festival. The place was buzzing from the time we got there til the time we left. Class place and people

Wow! ..........well, I hope you didn't go there on the strength of my post. Sorry if you did, but I was just passing on some info. At least we all know now not to go next year.

Funny, I was in Sligo Sunday night, and the place was jumping.
Apparently the concert was pretty miserable, though. No good reports.

I had serious craic anyway. Heard one or two graet sessions too. Had tunes with Andy Morrow, Dave Sheridan, Oliver Loughlin, Maraid Hurley, Damian O'Brien, Ashling Costello, Padraig McGovern, Donal Reilly, Leonard Barry, Bernie McGabhann, Damian Stenson and Sean Carroll to name but a few. Couldn't have asked for much more. Thanks to all involved in organising one of the highlights of the year. Roll on John McKenna!!

Re: Sligo Live? Sligo Dead, more like

Was at it this year too. I will not be returning. They had the usuall bands that we get to hear constantly and every session we went to hear seemed to be on a drink or smoking break. I have no problem with that but it was alot more than I have ever seen before.
I think Ill just go to the usuall Celtic Connections and Willie week and the likes any more rather than getting my hopes up.

I was listening to the Joe Duffy show on radio today and a good few people were phoning in saying how great the festival was etc etc. I did'nt hear any of them complain-maybe they are the promoters of the thing....

Re: Sligo Live? Sligo Dead, more like

Had a great weekend myself. Went up Sat and back mon. Saturday was quiet but it livened up at about 10 o'clock and went on till the wee hours in the Riverside. Music was great in Furey's with Siobhan Peoples, Murty Ryan, Paul McSherry, Shane McAleer and Geraldine Clancy.
I myself was happy not to see the place swamped with a pile of drunken eejits creatin problems, smashin bottles and startin fights.

It reminded me of Miltown Malby and Tubercurry from the mid to late 80's.
You'll enjoy this festival more while it's in it's infancy.

How does it compare to the Ennis Trad Fest?

Re: Sligo Live? Sligo Dead, more like

I agree with John McCartin and Shtrum - the festival was great. I particularly enjoyed the Dervish, and Seamie O Dowd (and friends) gigs, and there were some fantastic sessions. Highlights were the Fureys session with Siobhán (my teacher), Murty, Shane, Paul etc, and also sitting out on a bench in the blazing sun watching and listening to a group of top class musicians (which included Liam and Brian from Dervish) playing outside a pub by the river, I think it was the fiddler's creek. All in all a great weekend, no complaints here!!

Lots of music about the town for the week-end! heard the gigs weren't great but the sessions definitely made up for it. lovely tunes in the hotel on the friday night with john kelly, shane mcaleer, aisling costello, ger clancy, damien stenson and a few more.heard lots of music for the entire week-end which is what the week-end is all about.
