help identifying a tune (slow reel in E dorian)

Hi,

My name is Frank, and I'm writing to ask for help in identifying a tune that I found while helping a friend transfer old field-recordings from cassette tape to digital files.

You can hear the recording here:

http://suddensong.org/thesession/unknown-1.mp3

I tried to transcribe the tune into ABC as best as I could, and typed fragments into the Advanced tunes search here, but no luck:

X: 1
T: Unknown tune
M: 4/4
L: 1/8
R: reel
Q: 1/4=120
K: Edor
|: B2EG BcdE | B2EG BcdB | A2FD ADDE | FAAB A4 |
B2EG BcdE | B2EG BcdB | A2FA defe | dBAF E4 :|
|: Beef ggfg | afde e2dB | Addc dzd2 | defe dBA2|
B2ef g2fg | afde e2dB | A2FA defe | dBAF E4 :|

The folks at the local session hadn't heard of it either.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Frank

Sounds very similar to Pigeon on the Gate, but not exactly...

Yeah, one of many variants of Pigeon on the Gate, I believe. Also have a look at these related tunes:

Green Fields of Rossbeigh: http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/322

yuck. sounds like a good tune put through some slow down software. Maybe "pigeon on the pagoda"? A good aurgument for the burning of all Hammered Dulcimers.

Re: help identifying a tune (slow reel in E dorian)

Thanks, all. I can hear some of the similarities to Pigeon on the Gate, but also many differences. It sounds like these tunes can vary quite a bit from setting to setting!

No slow-down software was used. The original field recording sounds practically identical to the mp3 I posted (at least to me).
