Did anyone else here got and see Martin Hayes at the Irish centre in Hammersmith last night? I was blown away. It is the first time I have seen him live and although I have heard cds like Live in Seattle nothing prepared me for the intensity of his performance. While his slower stuff is still sublime, what particularly surprised me was when he picked up the tempo. It remained distinctly Martin Hayes and yet with a tremendous energy and power which has yet to be captured IMHO in any of his cds to date. Awesome! He even had the incredible courtesy to do an encore of requests shouted from the audience - what a star! A truly inspirational performance.
No I didn't see Martin Hayes last night but I have seen him live before, with guitarist Dennis Cahill. They were fantastic.Funny you don't mention Dennis Cahill! Was he not there?Cos I think he adds a lot to the performance. For me it's the interaction between the two that's so magical.
I last saw Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill at the Irish centre in Hammersmith about 9 or 10 years ago when I lived in London. Now I live out in the sticks, and only got to hear that they were playing just this week - too late to get tickets, get babysitter etc etc...I love their style of playing, and have learned a lot of tunes from their cd's - does Dennis still wear his tweed cap on back to front?!
Yes Dennis was there and it was thoughtless for me not to give him greater credit. He did an amazing job backing Martin and the chemistry between them was great - even if Dennis seemed to spend most of the evening playing about two chords - albeit very inventively! And yes he still wears his cap back to front. That very sparse and restrained backing really gives Martin a great foundation and iks undoubtedly a crucial part of the sound
