' OR ’ ? Problematic apostrophes

' OR ’ ? Problematic apostrophes

I've just realized (with Ceolachan's help) that when I submit a tune with an apostrophe (for example the last one I submitted Richie's) it's not linked to the album because my apostrophe is different than yours, since I have a Spanish keyboard.

They may look the same thing some times:
MINE:''''''''''''' YOURS: ’’’’’’’’’’
But they are different, so it's a problem.

However I've also realized that in this website both options are used, because one of the tunes that I've submitted (Timmy Collins') does have the link to the album. And why? because in the tune list in the database my apostrophe is used.

To see it yourself, compare the apostrophes here: http://www.thesession.org/recordings/display/1486
and here:
http://www.thesession.org/recordings/display.php/1940
(Not easy to be seen at simple sight, copy them and paste them in wordpad, and then paste many of them like this ''''''' ’’’’’’’ to see the difference)

Does anyone know how to type the English apostrophe with foreign keyboards?
Does anyone know why the foreign apostrophe is used on thesession.org too? (and not by foreigners like me)

The only thing I can think of is using the character code 0039.
Hold ALT down while typing 0039 on the number pad. When you let go of the Alt key, the apostrophe will appear.

You must type it on the number pad, the numbers above the letters will not work. You have to type the leading zeroes, just typing 39 will not work.

Hope this helps.

aha.... Shrog, but when I do that what I get is: ''''''' , which is "my" apostrophe... and not "yours", which would be ’’’’’’’

Re: ' OR ’ ? Problematic apostrophes

OK, try Alt + 0034, which on my computer will produce the wrong one. Maybe we're switched around.

You can also try Alt + 0096 or Alt + 0180. In fact, you can try all numbers from 0032 up until you find the one you want.

OK

Ok now I understand it all, thanks to Laitch who explained it to me.

The most commonly used apostrophe mark on keyboards worldwide is [ ' ], ("mine") So it's not only mine, you use it too, that's what I didn't know. Well at least it's the common mark in American keyboards.
This problem with the tune, Richie's, was caused by one
member's choice of using an uncommon mark, maybe it's the default mark in... Irish keyboards? or whereever s/he is from.

So now you know, remember: When you search a tune that has an apostrophe, if you don't get results then repeat the search using the other apostrophe mark.

Re: ' OR ’ ? Problematic apostrophes

Under 'Regional and Language Options' in 'Control Panel' there are the following options for 'English':

English (Australia)
English (Belize)
English (Canada)
English (Caribbean)
English (Ireland)
English (Jamaica)
English (New Zealand)
English (Philipines)
English (South Africa)
English (Trinidad)
English (United Kingdom)
English (United States)
English (Zimbabwe)

When you get to 'Spanish', which says something it's spread and wealth of variety, it is equally detailed ~ 19 entries. Each 'set' has its selection of characters and some have the upright strike for an apostophe and others have the curl, I wouldn't doubt that some may have the angle as well. For the curl and the angle it is set directionally depending on where it is put, in other words there is an in curve and an out curve, a lean to the right and a lean to the left, put your right foot in, put you right foot out, and shake it all about...

Sorry, suddenly the musical 'Frankenstein' is taking over my brain waves...though I've gotten the lyrics wrong...

Anyway, with the one upright slash, there is only the one way with everything. I suspect that some of the Spanish character lists are one way, with pairs, and some of the others are as you have yours set, with the upright slash.

If you look at the examples you'll see that the upright, because of it's nature, occupies less space and is tightly repeating close together ~ ''''''' ~ while the 'curve' or the 'angle' requires more space and shows it in the repeats ~ ’’’’’’’.... . . . . . . .

Whew! Mad eh?

Actually, the Spanish is more detailed, 6 more entries than for English...
