custys

Hey folks,

need some help!

I'm in the middle or recording a new solo album and am in the middle of filling out my mcps copyright license application.

Need to get the names of the tune composers and, if they have one, their publishing company.

I'm recording the jig "custys" aka "john bradys", aka "karen tweeds" (http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/1204)

Theres big debates on the comments bit of it on who composed it...can anyone shed any light? Was it definitly John Brady? If so, anyone got any info on him? Or tales behind the tune?
I don't want to say a tune is written by someone when it wasn't, or the oppisite and say a tune is trad when it isn't.

Hope you can help!

Incidently my uncle is called john brady....though he hasn't a musical bone in him!

Re: custys

According to the Fiddler's Companion: "The tune is sometimes credited to London flute player and singer Siobhán O'Donnell".

SIOBHÁN O'DONNELL'S NO. 2. AKA and see "Custy's," "Karen Tweed's." Irish, Jig. Tweed (Karen Tweed's Irish Choice).
T:Siobhan O'Donnell's No.2
C:Siobhan O'Donnell
D:Mary Custy & Eoin O'Neill, With a lot of help from their friends
D:Michael McGoldrick, Morning Rory
D:Flook!, Live!
B:Karen Tweed's Irish Choice (plus accompanying tape)
R:jig
M:6/8
L:1/8
K:Am
a2 A AGE | GAB A3 | eag edc | eAB AGE |
cde dcA | ~G3 G/B/cd | eAa ged | [1 cA^G A3 :|[2 cA^G A2 ^g|]
|: a^ga ged | edg edc | ~A3 GAc| dec deg |
aeg dec | ~A3 GEG | cde ged | cA^G A2 ^g :|

No reference to John Brady here, and he has a jig listed separately that I can't tell if it bears any relation.

Re: custys

Note that in the ABC, the C: refers to the composer, D: to Discography (which includes Mary Custy), and B: for Book (referencing Karen Tweed). Might be how those names were identified with the tune.

Re: custys

The Fiddler's Companion includes some incorrect information about a few tunes. The jig in question here is definitely not composed by Siobhan O'Donnell. See: http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display.php/819/comments#comment200098

Re: custys

To clarify,

1) M. McGoldrick recorded it as Custy's on "Morning Rory"
2) Mary Custy did it as Karen Tweed's on "Mary Custy and Eoin O'Neill with a lot of help from their friends"
3) Karen Tweed did it as Siobhan O'Donnell's
4) Sharon Shannon did it as John Brady's on "Each Little Thing"
5) John Skelton did it as "McIntyre's Fancy": http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000036Z3/103-2604431-5599049?v=glance&n=5174

Re: custys

cheers guys....

think i'm gonna just have to put names in a hat to what I call it and attribute it as!

Re: custys

Slainte, very interesting. Almost sounds like an inside joke, as they pass around the credit.

Re: custys

Why don't you just buy John Brady's book of tunes. I'm sureComhaltas in Monkstown could point you in the right direction. Putting names in a hat is definitely NOT the thing to do.

Re: custys

Rachrach, instead of putting names in a hat, how about you take the time to read carefully the comments here in the thread you posted, particularly Slainte's comments and the links he has kindly provided, and you will get the answer you require as to the title and composer of the tune. It's the least you can do when people have taken the time to answer your question.

Re: custys

You know what – I’d say he was only joking about the hat.

Re: custys

I'd say she was, but I'd also say she didn't bother clicking on Slainte's links.

Re: custys

Yeah.

Re: custys

Yeah. So obviously she fully deserves to be shot down with my horribly patronising comments. I mean, I've had a really bad day, so I've got to take it out on someone :-)

Re: custys

Go for it, I’m right behind ya.

Re: custys

No, there's really no need for it, BegF. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Re: custys

Apologies to all concerned.

Re: custys

the tune is called McIntyre's Fancy and was composed by John Brady in 1983. It's good that some people go to the bother of researching tunes properly!!
