i'm not a singer myself but i love to listen to them. i noticed that there is no archive of songs on this site. i was just wondering if many other people think that a song archive should be added?
Songs ?
It's bad enough when people call tunes songs......
Actually, I have a ( new ) song file, as well as a new tune file. But the tune file grows much more quickly, even with two or three tunes to a page. Can't work that one out, especially as I hear more songs than tunes, on the whole and by and large.
A song file would be a welcome addition, i think. It could probably be managed easy enough too, as long as it's not clogged with the obvious ones (hwiskey in the jar, wild rover etc). Not that im staunchly against those ones (although i haven't sang them in years) but it should be kept fairly original
Seconded. You could always start your own song website., but the "Mudcat Cafe" does a pretty good job with songs. Hard to see how you could improve on that.
There are a lot of good song databases around, just google Irish song lyrics or Scottish song lyrics. Lets not clutter up this website with too much extra stuff. And people around here are very tolerant about letting us who sing discuss song-related topics once in a while.
Jeremy states right up front that this site collects dance tunes, which is why there is no place in the tune database for aires, and I think that clear focus has served the site well in the past.
I don't really see any good reason why something like that could *not* be added, not that I'd use it much myself. And if there were sufficient demand for some kind of songs database, Jeremy could alter his "mission statement".
Just one problem I could foresee is if the emphasis of the site altered to becoming a folksong oriented site, in which case it would be just a kind of mustard coloured Mudcat.
Oh, and what about musical notation? (OK, 2 problems.) People here submit their tunes as ABC's, which then get converted to dots and midi files. Could lyrics and dots be easily displayed? Seems like a lot of work, ie even more of slog for Jeremy.
Would it work better in the meantime if people submitted songs in discussion topics, like the recent one about parody songs?

Re: the songs
Mmm, I wouldn't mind but it would probably be a bit complicated. A lyric database on it's own might be feasible.
Try Mudcat Cafe for songs, if you haven't already done so.

Sarah, nah.....leave well enough alone. Enough singers in the real world to contend with. This is a tunes sanctuary
