Hello,
I'm looking for great recordings of accordion (concertina as well) and fiddle, but without any other instruments. I.e., just duets, plain and simple. Any recommendations would be quite appreciatied.
noel hill and tony linnane might be your cup of tea although there are other instruments on some of the tunes, ditto the aidan coffey and seamus creagh album.
I have only a few box recordings, so I'm not in much of a position to talk of favorites, but I like James Keane's Roll Away the Reel World, which has four tracks of unaccompanied fiddle/box duet (the rest is box+guitar or banjo). The fiddle player there is Sean Keane.
wol
Two Gentlemen of Clare. Joe Ryan, fiddle, and Gerdie Commane, concertina. There is some bouzouki by Eoin O'Neill, which is very nice, but there are several cuts that are just fiddle and concertina. This is a wonderful album of Clare traditional music.
I can't think of a fiddle/box album with no accompaniment at all. But, you might want to try Eavesdropper (Kevin Burke & Jackie Daly), since, as far as I can recall, some of the tracks are completely unaccompanied, and none has more than one other instrument alongside the fiddle and the box.
Andy Morrow/ Tony O Connel & Arty McGlynn
Padraig Rynne/Paul Bradley & Paul Meehan
Ronan O Flaherty/Edel Fox & Brian McGrath (release soon)
Aiden Coffey/Frankie Gavin & Arty McGlynn
I know all these albums have some sort of backing but the melody is top class and not over powered by the backers.
Just some of my favourites.
Eavesdropper with Kevin Burke and Jackie Daly. The Boston Edge, Joe Derrane and Seamus Connolly with John McGann on mandolin (one extra instrument OK?).
Tracin', mentioned above, is a superb album. Exactly what you are looking for.
Stewart, that's Gearoid O hAllmhurain on concertina with fiddler Patrick Ourceau on Tracin', not Eamon O'Leary. Eamon O'Leary plays (but not concertina) with Patrick on another CD, Live at Mona's.
Thanks so much for all the responses. The question was prompted upon listening to Tony MacMahon and Seamus Connolly play "Toss the Feathers", and being struck by the uncluttered purity of the sound (in addition to the beauty of the playing). On the other hand, Tony MacMahon is sort of his own backer...Btw, the track can be heard here: http://www.macmahon.info/tracks.html
Thanks again, I'm very appreciative, and can't wait to listen to as much as I can get my hands on.
Joe Burke and Andy Mcgann Put ot two cd's together. I think they are just about the most prolific exponents of irish music i have ever heard. A tibute to Micheal Coleman is almost imposible to get a hold of. You can pick up the "Funny Reel"
at any irish music store with a decent collection.

I don't remember there being any other instruments on Jackie Daly/Seamus Creagh.
I think there are a few concertina/fiddle duets on the Elizabeth Crotty CD from RTE.

Re: Favorite recordings of box / fiddle?
I'm assuming you're not counting the presence of backers as "other instruments." Here are a couple nice recordings aside from those mentioned already.
james kelly, paddy o'brien (offaly), daithi sproule
seamus connolly and paddy o'brien (nenagh)
liz carroll and tommy mcguire
michelle o'brien, aogan lynch, gavin ralston
p.j. king, martin murray, cyril o'donoghue and colm murphy
