Hi, I'm writing an essay on the ornamentation used by Michael McGoldrick, if anyone knows of any analysis of his playing that I could look at could you let me know? Even if you dont, any in depth analysis of contemporary trad flute playing would be good too.
Cheers
I think his "modern" style of playing is heavily influenced by Eastern European and Breton trad. flute styles. I heard Brian Finnegan learned different types of ornamentation while teaching English in Hungary, and such knowledge and techniques of different trad. styles must have passed on to McGoldrick.

Re: flute ornamentation
He isn't just jazzy and "modern." He could play in both a very straightforward trad style and very funky ones.
If you're interested in his traditional style of playing, listen to track 9 of Eamonn Coyne's "Through the Round Window": http://tradtunes.com/album_details.php?album_id=3189
Or you could try Ceili House from Manchester: http://www.rte.ie/radio1/ceilihouse/rams/7may.smil His pure drop playing with Dezi Donnelly starts around 20:45.
