Can you imagine a more exciting concert than a head to head with J Scott Skinner & Sean McGuire?
Who would 'win'?
Who would you like to see in a 'head to head' - & why?
Noel Hill & Micheal O Raghallaigh perhaps?
Or maybe .......
Och I know, who cares?.... what's the point?......we've asked this question before, sooooooo many times ........oh I'm just so tired of living, where's my pine box?......................................
Well, Skinner just wasn't my cup of tea at all. McGuire was some of the time, so he gets my vote. As you say, entirely pointless question, no wonder we can't find half the old regulars --- go play some tunes, you'll feel better.
Hey Ptarmigan/Dick
It's Jen, the Aussie flute player from ballycastle,
just wanted to say hey! and hope you're having a good time!
We miss you guys and the awesome wee toms session
Have fun!
jen
Aw Kris, me poor wee thin skin is cut to the quick!
Hey, by the way Kris, don't you need to update your bio:
- "Not been to a public session for a long time - not too keen on the smoke"
- now that there's no smokin in da pubs over there now?
So, have you ventured out yourself recently - & if so, what's the verdict?
"Paddy Moloney and Bruce Forsyth" LOL
Tell me, is that what they call a 'spoonerism'?
Hey 'Flute Jen', good to hear from you.
Hope all's well down under?
By the way, did you guys ever get that new session started over there?
Had Slainte over here recently & managed to 'drag' him along to the Springhill session too () where I believe he was also just a little bit impressed by young Dee's tootin on her Flute!
Looking forward to your return visit Jen.
Speaking of Slainte - you are working well there Sir.
Yes, I like your idea of:
Padraig Rynne & Simon Thoumire
& also
Mike McGoldrick & Dee Havlin
Good people & mighty musicians one & all, but I think both contests would end in a draw!
Scott Skinner vs Paganini? Naw, nae contest there kuec! Now, Paganini & Fritz Chrysler ( I know, its - Kreisler ) that'd be more like the thing!
"Usually this virtuoso stuff and showing off bores me to tears." - erm, just in case you are not with us here kuec, I'm not a promoter who is about to arrange these contests, this is actually just fantasy.
Well, after all, think about it, most of the folks we've mentioned are just a little bit 'dead'!
Donal Lunny v Jimmy page. Now that'd be interesting!! - I agree!
& what about Gerry 'Banjo' O'Connor & Earl Scruggs perhaps?
Or maybe even Ringo McDonagh & Ringo Star?
Or, in the same vein:
Tommy Hayes & Jim Sutherland?
Now that'd be some gig wouldn't it?
I'm sure the guys are the best of mates & would rise rightly to the challange, with no holds barred, & no quarter asked, or given!
Wow, just think of the percussive fireworks those dudes would create!
Well, as far as I'm concerned, the best clash of the titans I ever saw was the dvd of the "music for two" tour by bela fleck and edgar meyer! I almost cried.... so beautiful and yet so frustrating. But anyway, two people I would like to have a jam together: Brendan Ring and Sylvain Barou. I know they did have a jam already but I wasn't there :(
Peace, FFF
Must confess F F F, I hadn't actually heard of Brendan but had a listen to his playing at 'Wooden Flute Obsession volume 1' & aye the lad can toot OK!
Now all I need to do is find a clip of Sylvain's playing to compare, before I sanction this contest!
Ha Ha Slainte, never thought I'd hear Tommy being described as a 'Swinging fiddle meister'! He spent two afternoons sitting playing in one of the wee cottages at the Ulster American Folk Park & he is certainly a meister, of that there is no doubt, as is Brian Rooney.
I suspect that once these two hit the stage, they would just look at each other & say - feck the contest, let's have a few tunes!
I've seen & heard Peter play & he plays my kind of music.
But, confession time agan, I hadn't heard Kevin's playing till I tracked down a sound clip just now [ at: http://www.bogfire.com/kevin_henry_music.html ] - very tasty indeed & made me think, straight away, of the playing of young O'Murchu!
Must admit, I could listen to such lovely relaxed flute playing all week, while much of the modern jazzy flootin & tootin & splootin & scrootin & sprootin & schlootin ....( pauses to wipe slavers from beard! ) leaves me cold, bored & audibly exhausted after a couple of tracks.
Now, excuse me while I go & order Kevin's CD.
Thanks for bringing him to my attention Slainte. Go & have yourself a pint of the black stuff, on me. I'll gie ye the dosh fur it, when next we meet!
Could you arrange a duet concert of the fiddle meisters, Mr. Ptarmy? I'd love to watch them play together in very similar styles.
Then, how about Seamus Tansey, Matt Molloy, and Harry Bradley competing for the title of "King of the Concert Flute"? This would never come true though.
Backtracking a little, I just had to check out your Banjo, Bass & Bluegrass duo F F F - Cooooooooooooooool
My son, Kevin, plays with a Glasgow band (appropriate link there I suppose) 'Green Goblin', with him on 6 string Bass & Steven McCluskey on 5 String Banjo.
If you like your 'grass' rocky & jazzy - check it out: http://www.myspace.com/greengoblinband
Not in the same league as Bela & Edgar I grant you, but the lads can play.
Now Slainte, why would your Tansey, Molloy & Bradley contest not come off?
Are you saying they are all too gentlemanly too agree to anything as common & vulgar as a music competition?
Ooooops! Better be careful, the CCE police might be sniffing around this thread, looking for ideas!
Or, are you saying that they all, already agree as to which one of them is the recognised master of 'the wooden stick with some holes in it'!?
Oh yeah, & tell me, was there any significance in the order in which you listed them?
Now, must go & make a few phone calls, I'll need a stage, lots of money, & two chairs, one for you Slainte & one for me. Well, you did want Tommy & Brian to perform just for us - didn't you?
Good choice sir, for he is great company, full of amusing anectdotes & information on musicians & tunes & of course a terrific Flute player into the bargain, (probably my personal favourite) but I don't believe you will catch him playing his flute in a Co Antrim Pub until they ban the dreaded weed - next April!
Course, if you come over again sooner than that, you could always go to Donegal & catch him playing in one of their 'clean air' pubs!
I'll probably be in the North again next April for some other reasons too while I actually miss the smokey session in Edinburgh a couple of months ago.
Right. Then how about a flute trio concert, instead of a competition? This would be safer. You could add Mr. F. Gavin on flute as a safety net.
Ha Ha Slainte, that reminds me of Bell's sessions, years ago, long before the smoking ban, when a certain group of musicians would always stop playing, perhaps twice during the session & go outside!?
I could never understand why they needed a break, until one night some generous soul, seeing my bewilderment, whispered in my ear the magic words - 'whacky backy' & all became clear!
Wonder where the Bells smokers go now?
Have they parked a 'smokers caravan' up the lane at the side?
Or do they take turns holding the umbrella, on a wet night?
Titans?
Titans?

Re: Titans?
You 'miss the smoke'? Well all I can say is, thank goodness I play the Fiddle & not the Flute, cause I wear one of these now, to most sessions: http://www.industrysearch.com.au/products/viewrecord.aspx?ID=11328

Roll on next April!
OK so Gavin & Tansey on the same bill?
Have you checked out our insurance policy for this gig?
# Posted on May 21st 2006 by Ptarmigan
Re: Titans?
Well, not the smoke but the fantastic session with Mr. Gill's friends who happen to be smokers.
I'll say no more about kings of flute for safety reasons. Sorry, I shouldn't have started.
