I am traveling across the US this summer with my family and in addition to playing in as many sessions as I can would like to attend music festivals. Which festivals are the best?
St Paul, Minnesota has a good festival with a nice location by the river. They haven't booked their "local and regional" acts yet, but that's where you might find more trad. http://www.irishfair.com/
And then on September 15-17, 2006 in Military Park in
Downtown Indianapolis, is the Indiapolis Irish Fest.
It's a nice time if one can steer clear of the very loud "Irish rock" stages... <g>
Mostly concerts and demonstrations (some not particularly Celtic, IMHO - my "old-timey" band played there years ago, for example), but I did get to attend a workshop and hang out with Matt Heaton for the princely sum of $8. I did some volunteer work there last year, and will probably do so again.
I've not attended, but have heard very good things about the Celtic College, held just before the Celtic Roots Festival
(Aug 11-15, Goderich, Ontario, Canada):
If you're a Celtic Rock band in California, and you got a gig at the Dublin Ohio festival, be sure to include it in your adverts -- but leave off the Ohio part. This way people will think you played in Ireland. (I actually saw this being used by a local band)
