Great festivals

What's the wildest festival you've attended, and what made it so crazy?

Re: Great festivals

Phillipines - where the guys dress up as warriors (with sunnies and jeans) and smear themselves with pig fat and soot, and carry the crucifix, bottles of rum and shoot rifles. Not exactly a good celtic music festival, but "crazy".

Re: Great festivals

Tonder Festival 2005, I can't disclose why. Mainly cos I can't remember much through the thick Tuborg fog...

In Tønder, South West Jutland

This year's bill hasn't been finalised yet but there is a strong North American flavour this year. There's always a fair bit of Irish music, though. Lunasa are coming but there will be more.

Re: Great festivals

I've heard of (but never attended) carnivals, both in NE Scotland and SW England - no doubt in other parts of the British Isles as well - where young men display their virility by carrying flaming barrels of tar down the street. It is, I am told by a friend from Axminster, Devon, quite commonplace for participants to be admitted to hospital with serious burns. One doesn't even have to leave 'civilised' Western Europe to witness such barbarian practices.

Another thing I have heard of but never witnessed is the tomato festivals of Spain and Southern France, where all and sundry are pelted with overripe tomatoes.
