I'm hoping Jeremy won't delete this as it isn't specifically about music. For this reason, I'd be grateful if you could please refrain from discussing individual members.
The above question was posed on another thread and I had been thinking much the same thing recently until I realised that most of them are still but they've all changed their "handle".
I'm wondering why some members(sometimes very long standing contributors) feel the need to do this and why it seems to be more prevalent in recent weeks.
Yes, the discussions should be related to music etc so what have you(we) got to hide? Perhaps, it's either out of boredom or the fashionable thing to do? I realise that there are occasions when some contributors become obnoxious and we might wish to avoid them. However, surely we have the recourse to complain to the moderator and get them "kicked off" if they become that troublesome?
Another possibility is that our activities on this site are often misunderstood by fellow musicians and friends, i.e these who only look in now and again and don't see the full picture.
So, what do you think? Again, for the sake of peace and harmony, please don't refer to individual members unless it's yourself.
Darn it John J - looks like I'm still unfashionable - after all these years! Must try harder! Fraid I just can't bear to part with the old Arran Sweater etc ....says it all, I suppose.
I was off the net for nearly four months, but still follow the discussions. Why are there no really heated arguments these days, has everyone calmed down?????????
It seems like things are slower lately, I think the older crowd has talked the most obvious issues to death, and most of us have learned that heated cyber arguments are no fun in the long run (except perhaps to watch). Could this be like an old marriage where we all know what the other is going to say, so silence becomes a more frequent part of the relationship?
I thought about changing my name on the site to something that was less obviously my name, but the ideas I had were all taken, so I will stick with my current screen name for the time being.
At first I was annoyed when people changed their screen names, but now I find guessing part of the fun. To each his own, I guess.
What I do miss is some of the people who used to chime in on a regular basis. But most of them turn up from time to time which means they are still out there lurking, they are just not jumping into the fray as frequently as they used to.
There is an element of deja vu in nearly all the threads these days (hence the many postings with so few responses) so most of the old lags (myself included) hang out in the tune section and are only occasionally exercised by the discussions when it looks as though there's an opportunity for either a laugh or a bit of a fight
Well, having being 'chastised' once or twice for slightly risque or 'off the topic' replies, I look in now and then but unless there is something useful to be said, I just pass on... Like I mentioned to Jeremy, a bit of slagging is all part of the fun!
I participate less than I used to because too many of the discussions devolve into debate instead of dialogue. When people insist on being "right," it's hard to foster a genuine conversation and earnestly consider other points of view. Especially when they routinely denegrate anyone who disagrees with them.
I find that the real world of sessions is much more diverse, open minded, and interesting than it is often painted here. This wasn't always the case--despite fewer members in the early years, diversity of opinion was very wide, and much better accepted, even welcomed, than it is today. In short, in years past, there was a generosity of spirit here that gibed with the mindset I found in the people who passed on this music to me 20 and 30 years ago. They made it clear then that this was as much a part of the tradition--to be passed down--as the tunes themselves.
I changed my screen name to the concertina technique that has been the most profound of late and has dramatically effected my playing. It's not an official name, but rather just what I call it.
Now this is a thread worth joining in. How ironic that a query aboout the absence of people results in their presence!
Yes I still look in frequently but find that my 'favourite band' hasn't changed much - in fact I still have absolutely no idea what it is
there hasn't been many really long threads recently - may be the titles are not very imaginative (and I do use them as a guide) but I do find that I only look at the slightly longer threads (presuming laziliy that if others have contributed a lot then there must be something in it) and I keep deleting responses before I post them because there's nothing else really to say....
So for a change..........
I have been away for a while (I've actually had to Work at Work...gasp...) So I pop in once in a while and spend a few minutes figuring out what everyone is calling themselves these days. Whatever. It's faster than doing a Sudoku, and injects a little mystery into my day.
"That said, my bio makes it quite clear who I am and where I'm coming from."
... not to mention "Hop Little Bunnies" in the list of tunes submitted ...
Not that I was ever really a pillar of the establishment here but ...
I've been through a period where playing (actually, any sort of life outside the Project From Hell) has been near-impossible.
I've long since reached the stage where the only thing that's going to improve my playing is actually playing - reading around the topic isn't helping like it once did.
IMO the signal-to-noise ratio is not what it was, partly to be expected as the numbers grow, but not helped by threads frequently morphing into continuations of ongoing over-arching arguments/disagreements/tub-thumping/whatever. I don't mind the same old topics getting rehashed but reading the same old arguments with the same old combatants polarised into the same old camps isn't useful for me right now.
Still a great site, (yay for Jeremy!) and a fabulous resource, and the discussions is just one part of it.
I still check this site from time to time, but but find I have nothing to say anymore about anything, as everything has been said in someway or another.
I know one guy that uses his own name, I haven't seen a post by him in a year or more. I don't get to sesh with him very often, but a couple of my fellow sessioniods see him frequently. I can still pull his name up in the "members", so I know it wasn't changed. I'll have them ask and see if I can get any insight. Might take a couple of weeks.
I know I'm not as active as I was last summer. Mostly becase I'm working days now and can't get by with as much (not enough time). I did read everything then, but I have learned that specific instrument questions are pretty serious. Any concert ot festival announcement if more than 300 miles away is probably not going to contain useful info, (for me anyway),. "Who's yr Favo(u)rite?" threads don't move me much. If archived for 100 years or so they might be useful in tracking trends for ethno-musicologists. Maybe I *should* participate....
The diamondesque gems of wit usually happen after a hijack or two. I haven't seen a really good hijack in a long time.
I'm lurking more and contributing less.(Actually I rarely contribute unless i'm dipping musicfan's (proverbial) pigtails in the (proverbial) inkwell.) But I'm also lurking less. I may yet become one of those Gone Regulars. I'll keep you posted.
i haven't changed my handle. i feel pretty lucky to have scored 'brendan' and i ain't gonna give it up. although i wouldn't exactly call myself a regular either. i come and go, i guess. i post less because i find myself repeating myself.
It's pretty much all been said before, but I still read a bit of every thread afraid that I might just miss something crucial.
But where are you Zina??
It's like a high school. Many folks have graduated and moved on.
Some drop by the alma mater once in a while to hear what the new kids are saying and then nod sagely thinking it's all been said before, only maybe in a different way. And they fondly remember the old crowd, the big fights, the characters who made it all bearable, the outright weird kids who have left to pursue their lives in even stranger worlds.
And a small few return to be teachers at their old high school.
Well I'm still here and drop in quite frequently but I must say that I miss some of the banter that we used to get from Michael Gill, Zina, Tony Ribas, Danny, and especially the wind ups from bliss.
Some of these people are still here, of course. Zina still posts very occasionally. I think she's just busy.
Actually, I had an e-mail from one member who is alive and well(but hasn't posted here) about this thread with a very reasonable explanation. I'll respect his/her privacy.
I do believe most of the old regulars still visit this site but just feel less inclined to post in the discussion forum. You'll still find them in the tunes section which is(really) the most important part of the site and it's original purpose.
Yeah, that was a lovely thread llig leahcim I've lurked religiously for years and years, and over the last few, rarely contribbed outside the hols, unless something like this comes up. Buck up everyone - the sound of your voices is beautiful.
Cheers
I wish Josh Kane and Glauber would be back as the regulars again. Their contributions were immense. And Miss Tanya Lee Teraoshi when she becomes a bit more mature and wise.
I see young Josh Kane from time to time, and he is doing very well. He is a member of Pendragon, a popular local band that plays a lot of Irish and other music of celtic origins, and the Alleged Ceilidhe Band, which as you would expect from their name, plays music for Irish dancing. He is very busy, which probably explains his absence from the board. Often when I find a setting of a tune here that feels comfortable, because that is the way we play it around here, I will find that it was Josh that posted it.
Unfortunately, although her name comes up from time to time, I am new enough that I missed young Tanya's contributions to the board, and from what I have heard, I would imagine that many of them were probably deleted.
Was there a Scraper before there was an Old Scraper?
Or are you refering to me?
I know I managed to get into some wee little scrapes on the yellow board over the years, but I didn't think I was infamous!!!! Not beyond the norm. Just thought people didn't take any notice of my meanderings - just that insignificant bit o' an old punter from beyond the black stump. Wouldn't hurt a fly intentionally.
Have to admit to not taking much notice of tanya, yohan or nastyweegirl, or maybe their posts got scrubbed before I ever got to read 'em.
