About this site

I love thesession, but some of its aspects seem awkward to use. For example, on the Mudcat forum, a new post to a thread (or discussion) puts that thread at the top of the page. That way the discussions are always kept current, and one doesn't have to search through past pages to find a thread. I've posted some discussions here and found that folks just stop posting, presumably because the thread is "old" and buried in what are, as I write, more than 900 pages of discussions.

I also find it odd that using my "back" button after reading a post always puts me back to page 1, instead of the page I was on.

Any thoughts on this?

Cheers,
Michael

Re: About this site

Hmm, my back button always takes me to the appropriate page. (Most commonly using Safari on Mac).

And the most recent post putting that topic at the top of the list is interesting, although, I kind of like it the way it is... and you have the "Comments" tab to dig through the most recent comments.

Re: About this site

If the back button takes you back to page one, click on discussions to stay on the same page.

Re: About this site

No, that happens to me too. When searching through pages, if you hit back on the browser, it will bring you to page one. You have to click "previous" down by the page numbers.

Re: About this site

Well I happen to like things the way they are. Most of the improvements that could be made within the structure of the site have been long sorted out.
If you have an issue maybe just email Jeremy directly

Let's hear it for Jeremy and if you haven't donated to the site - do it now!

Re: About this site

I like it like this too. Threads disappearing off the edge of a virtual cliff can be a good thing. It helps prevent ongoing flame wars and keeps the topics changing constantly from day to day.

Re: About this site

I *much* prefer this site - I get so annoyed having to jump up and down threads on yahoo groups, and checking every thread to see if anything came in between the last one that's indicated and anything I've read before on some forums, or trying to remember if I've read a particular comment when all that's displayed is the user and a date, when this one is so easy to scan, that I could scream.

Keep up the good work, Jeremy!

Re: About this site

This site is elegant in its simplicity. It would be nice, though,
if it had a hot water dispenser.

Re: About this site

This site does a great job of giving dead horses a decent burial.

Perhaps the hot air flow could be adapted to get hot water?

Re: About this site

I've always wondered about the new posts not appearing at the top too. It makes more sense to see what threads are still being updated when they appear at the top. The argument that the way it is at the moment " helps prevent ongoing flame wars and keeps the topics changing constantly from day to day" might be true, but it's the lazy man's method of moderating a site in my humpty dumpty opinion.

Re: About this site

Poor Jeremy. If he moderates it more, people whinge and moan, and if he takes a more hands-off approach people still whinge and moan, saying that he's not doing enough, so it's like he's damned if he does damned if he doesn't. Why don't we just leave him alone and get on with talking about something worthwhile eh?

For a change.

Re: About this site

Suggestions on how a site might be better organized do not constitute whinging and moaning, they are simply that - suggestions and as such perfectly valid. So let's indeed stop whinging and moaning and get on with talking about something worthwhile eh?

Re: About this site

I didn't read many suggestions in the initial post - just moans, but hey, that's allowed as well. However I agree with Mark - Jeremy seems damned if does and damned if he doesn't. That said, I prefer it the way it used to be - that's not a moan, because I still like the site, just an opinion (treading a thin line, I know)...I've got other things to actually moan about - for example, the case of that bloke Gary McKinnon:

Re: About this site

what's all this about with the 'back button'

. . . give Jeremy and this site more of the front button and you'll be grand

# Posted on May 6th 2006 by lisaniska

Re: About this site

the "back button" business is a really good point-if i've taken the trouble to go as far as page 15 to find a discussion worth even opening, then when i realise it isnt as fun as i'd expected, and want to get back onto page 15 to carry on with my trawling-if i hit "back" on windows explorer, or mozilla firefox while in the thread, im brought right back to page one, its just annoying, not life threatening. now, off downstairs for the hot water, grumble grumble

Re: About this site

Cammy, if this was about suggestions and constructive criticism, then I'd be all for it, but read your post again. You basically called Jeremy "lazy". That may not be how you meant it, but that's certainly how your post reads to me.

# Posted on May 7th 2006 by Dr. Dow

Re: About this site

To explain the 'back button' issue: The tabs at the top of the page (comments, search, etc.) are used as a way of hiding information on the SAME page as the one you're looking at, so if you click on one, you're not going to a 'comments' page, you're simply telling your browser to show you a concealed part of the same page. Therefore, when you click back, you go back to the previous PAGE, which means the previous section of the website. That's why you're being taken back to the 'starting page'. It's not worth changing this because of the ease of access created by the 'all on one page' approach. Well done, Jeremy.

Re: About this site

I can easily live with this forum the way it is. For the tune collection on this site alone, Jeremy should be well thanked. And I'm sure the guy has enough other things to do in life than having to keep up with moderating the chaos that sometimes goes on here. If I were to moderate this site myself, I'd probably use the lazy method too! It often depends on how the users treat a site. Some forums manage to take care of themselves better than others while using the "new post at the top" method.
