Does anyone know of a tenor banjo instructor in the Richmond, VA area?

Re: tenor banjo instructor in Virginia, USA

I'm not aware of any Irish music in the Richmond area - which is not to say there isn't any, just that if there is whoever's playing there hasn't made themselves known to their neighbors to the north, like myself in the DC area. So you might have a bit of a problem finding a banjo teacher there. However, we do have a nice little Irish music scene happening in the DC metero area, with a couple of excellent banjo players. One of them, Betsy O'Malley, lives in Vienna VA, about a two hour drive away from you, and besides being an excellent player she has taken a week-long course from CCE in Dublin and is certified as a teacher of Irish music. Contact me offline if you'd like her contact info.

The other DC-area banjo player I'm thinking of is Patrick Cavanagh of Silver Spring MD, who actually went to college in Richmond several years ago. He might know if there's anything Irish going on now around there. Patrick sometimes posts here at thesession.org, so maybe he'll chime in on this.

Also, in Charlottesvile there is the Blue Ridge Irish Music School (BRIMS), www.brimstunes.org . I don't know if they teach banjo or not, but I know several of the folks who started this school, and besides being great people they have a real commitment to Irish traditional music. They'd be well worth contacting in any case.

Hope this helps!

There actually is some Irish music in the Richmond area, at least according to Steve Mallis, one of the session leaders of the NoVa (Auld Shebeen) session, who moved down there recently. Let's see:

There is an Irish Session down here in Richmond. It had been
running for about 3 years. It meets on the 2nd and 4th Wed of the
month. It meets at Rosie Connolly's Pub in Shockoe Bottom.
1548 East Main Street (fronts 17th St. near the Farmer's Market)
804-343-1063 Contact Stephen Wilson (not 'our' Steve Wilson, but a
really nice guy none the less!) <schlepworld@yahoo.com> for more
info.

Might be a good place to look for a banjo tutor.
