Sorry to pester everyone like this, but I have a good friend and her daughter going to stay in Montreal for a while and as they are going on their own, I thought it might be nice for them to make a few friends while they are there.
They are not musicians, but have a very deep respect for the music and enjoy going to sessions. The daughter is only 11yrs old and is a fluent Irish speaker as is her mother, although they have been learning french for months, and the Mother would be more or less able to hold her own in a conversation.
So these are my queries.
Does anyone know of any Irish clubs, music or otherwise in the city?
Also can anyone give me some links for long term accomodation, such as a house they can rent for the 3months they are staying?
Or any advice as to what kind of city it is and what you can do while you are there?
I know everyones time is very precious but I would be extremely grateful for advice of any kind.
Hello Blas,
Your friend and her daughter will find Montreal a very session oriented city. There is a session scheduled practically every day of the week, except for Thursday and Friday. These sessions are either traditional Irish , or French Canadian, ) or a combination of the 2.(BTW a great deal of the French Canadian musicians here speak perfect English, so there's no problem there).
Please have a look at the link for O'Regan's that Patkiwi sent on. In that particular link are links to all the sessions in Montreal, as well as a comprehensive outline of our own Wednesday night session, which was primarily launched as a platform where learners of the music can get together in a relaxed, non-threatening informal and supportive atmosphere. Many close friendships have been spawned from that session, so I'm certain that the lady and her daughter will feel more than welcome there! There is a guestbook in the web- site, so please feel free to post any message pertaining to this subject there as well.
Aside from the sessions, there is a small , but ever growing circle of learners of the Irish language in Montreal , myself included, and I do try to offer a sampling of sean-nos singing in Irish from time to time in the sessions I attend .Here is the link to Comhra, the Montreal Irish Language Study Circle. The website is undergoing re-construction at the moment, but have a look at it just the same:
www.comhra.org
Housing in Montreal is quite affordable, and depending on your friend's needs, there shouldn't be a problem to find a short term rental. She can perhaps spend a few days in the women's Y or one of the many hostels here, while she has a look around for what may suit her.
I don't know where your friend is from, but I'm sure that she'll fall in love with Montreal. It is a a very special city, and I'm sure that she will have many rewarding experiences while here.
Thanks for all the replies, believe it or not, these links will be the ones that my friend will be using when she goes over there. So if anyone else knows of any other info, please dont be shy !!!
