Since my semester's tests might fall on July and some of August, I wonder if anyone knows a good summer school
that teaches Sean Nos, whistle, and Bodhran during these months.
What region of the world are you thinking of? Ireland? The USA? Israel? I highly recommend Lark Camp, which starts at the end of July and goes a week into August. It is located just outside of Mendocino, California, on the Norhtern California coast. You'll find worshops in all of the above, as well as great sessions into the wee hours. I've been going for three years, and wouldn't miss it for anything. Here's a link:
Consider the Irishfest Summer School (http://www.irishfest.com/summerschool/index.htm) which almost always has a class in sean nos singing and will have (at the festival itself) plenty of well known Irish sean nos singers there. The list noted above is incomplete for now but the bodhran and whistle teachers are good.
I once met a girl from your country in Carmel Gunning's Queen Maeve Summer School: http://www.cygo.ie/tradmusic Carmel is one of the best whistle players with a distinct style. Many of famous Sligo flute players used to be her students. She's a great sean nos singer too. Seamus O'Kane used to teach bodhran there, but I heard he's not well these days. But, the fiddle tutor of this year is Oisin Mac Diarmada of Teada! Also, you can have a look at the session with Liam Kelly of Dervish and Damien Stenson of Teada in a certain pub of the town on tuesday or wednesday. I strongly recommend this summer school.
Hi Hiro.
Where have you stayed while doing the Queen Maeve School? I am considering it. Besides the b&b's listed on their website for accomadation, I also found via google many hostels in or around Sligo town.
Was there last year and stayed in a lovely hostel which was very cheap. Can't remember the name off hand but can look it up. I'ld give Niamh a prod and she can give you details of the one she was in which was just by the college where its taught.
The hostel I Stayed in was the Eden Hill Holiday hostel. It was out the other side of town from the collge but its only a ten/15 min walk in and then a ten/15 min walk out again.
It was great , although I spent most of my time either in the pubs, at the college or just walking around. Did think about going back this year but got major system going in in August not to mention a probable house move so I'm going to Ireland in July instead.
Hey! Julie sent me the promised prod, so here I am...
I stayed in the An Óige hostel in Sligo, Yeats Village (http://www.anoige.ie/directory/sligo). The hostel is a series of duplexes, really nice place to stay, and right across the road from the IT so very handy for the course.
As for accomodation in Sligo town, try White House Hostel right in the centre. Like many other decent hostels in Ireland, it's not perfect, but very cheap and clean with friendly atmosphere and excellent location. You can't book a bed in the hostel online, but here's the details: http://www.hostelz.com/hostel/18279-White-House-Hotel In summer, it's advisable to book ahead by phone.
I've been there 3 or 4 times, and always ended up staying in the same room with 4 or 5 girls. That's not the main reason I often go back there though. Hope you'll enjoy the stay there, Andee.
So far the only dates that fit me are those
of the Comhaltas at Donegal.
Any suggestions? :(
(Right, forgot to mention, I was talking about Ireland)
For Keith - The sessions enlisted here have merged
into just one.. I attend it almost every week, it's quite intimate and fun, we're usually no more than 5-6 players but sometimes we tend to be around 10-15!
I usually try to avoid playing the Bodhran since we have around 7 Bodhran players vs. 2 flutes...
All in all, It IS fun, but it can't be compared to the legendary Doolin ones..

P.S. - do you attend any of the sessions listed here that are in Israel? What are they like?
