I don't know the guy in question but I.ve been to Cullen's several times in the past. Great pub for sessions. I met a banjo player there, Gerry Carty, in the '80's. Maybe this'll give you somekind of lead ?
Weird. I was going to mention Gerry. A lovely bloke and a good banjo player. I think he went to New York.
Peter did indeed play a mandola and was year away from becoming a doctor for many years.
Maybe I met both Larsheen and Strathfoyle in Cullens. I lived in Salthill at the time.
We located a bag of spuds in the Cellar bar and lived on nothing else for a week.
Cheers
It's a small world indeed, gedpipes. I remember the year well that I came across Gerry. It was 1978 in Cullen's, during my uni days. I was down with a good buddy picking up a repaired concertina at Tom Cussen's. I met Gerry the following year at the Fleadh Nua in Ennis, I haven't seen him since. Was The Continental the name of the hotel in Salthill that hosted a Sunday session back then ? If you hear anymore of Gerry I'd appreciate hearing from you. I'm in Florida these days.
I played a few tunes with Peter at the Ennis Trad Fest in 2004. I had met him originally in 1990 when he was living in Dublin. I can't remember where he said he was living now though.
I phoned my sister Breda Lewis (lewis family) & she told me that Pete is alive and well, living close-by to her in Crusheen Co.Clare. Address & phone number available.
Hello To you all and nice to come across my name being mentioned in such glowing terms!!!!!! This is Gerry Carthy now living in Santa Fe New Mexico and living off the music here for the last 20 years.
I probably think of Pete Galligan and Mickey my old friends every day. I play regular gigs here and the tunes we used to play together and which I still play take me back to those days in Galway for which I now achingly pine. In fact they are the first two names mentioned on my CDs in the list of old friends. Mickey I am sorry to say died in 1987. I play Mickey Finns Air all the time. I was playing three or four gigs a week with him before I left for the USA in 85.
Pete I am in contact with too. He now lives in Clarinbridge outside Galway on the Gort/Ennis road.
In those days the Sunday morning sessions were in O'Malleys off Eyre Square on Prospect Hill. We would all enter there at opening time after having taken the 'Cure' in Giblins across the road which was not officially open but whose premises were penetrated by a discreet tap tap tap on the front door as one looked over ones shoulders for the Gardai. The session often got started there usually by Mickey striking up the fiddle. There was a tradition of what was called A Noble Call where if Mickey started the he would in turn call on someone to do a spot - more often than not he would call on Corky unfortunately too now deceased...in a manner thusly......" A noble call is fine and a noble call is mine and I now call on Corky to give us 'The Swan' ...a recitation which Corky was inclined to make up on the spot..it was different every time....I smile as I write of those days.....
So...after O'Malleys we would then repair by car and bus and bike to Killorans in Salthill and all in the back door to watch hurling matches football matches if they were on that Sunday and then the session started again.....at 4pm the doors opened to the general public and we all left and scurried away to our various favorite pubs usually the Cellar or Mrs Cullens......and then we had to wake up Monday morning to face the day!@#$%^&*( Oh Jaysus....
Gos Bless you all and if you are ever in Santa Fe come and play a few tunes at my gigs...in the meantime check out YACHATS CELTIC MUSIC FEST OREGAN 06 ON THE WEB.

Not sure if ye guys have heard the sad news about Pete .but he died of a heart attack on Oct 25th. All the old crowd are devastated. God Speed Pete.

Are you talking about the box player from Mayo? Isn't his name Gallagher?
