How to correct an ABC file?

How to correct an ABC file?

In the Comments to the infuriatingly brilliant Donal Lunny tune "Lepadumdowledum", Dow posted a correction to the ABC file: http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/852

My question is, how can I incorporate the correction into the ABC? Also, is the sheet music identical to the ABC or is it correct? Any help appreciated.

Cheers,
Michael

Re: How to correct an ABC file?

As I understand the system, the only person who can alter the ABC in a posted tune is the member who posted the tune in the first place. This sometimes happens when someone spots an error in the ABC and draws it to the attention of the poster. Other members often also post alternative versions of the tune in the Comments section, but these alternatives are virtually never posted into the original ABC by the original tune poster.

As usually happens, the sheet music is posted very soon after the tune is posted and replicates the original ABC as filed (warts and all). The sheet music is not normally altered to take into account any later amendments to the ABC - except in exceptional circumstances I suppose.

In the case of http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/852 the amendment posted by Dow is not such, in my opinion, as to render the original ABC completely useless. I suggest in this case your best option is to download the ABC, incorporate Dow's amendments, and either manually edit a printout of the sheet music to correspond or use an application such as ABC2Win to print out the amended ABC.

BTW, I note that the member who posted "Lepadumdowledum" is called "no longer exists" - make of that what you will! If that member is no longer around then the only person with the administrative rights to alter the original ABC is Jeremy himself, and, as I have indicated, this is most unlikely to happen in the present instance.

Re: How to correct an ABC file?

If you want a "corrected" version in full dots or abc, cut & paste the whole abc (including all the headers) into the box here http://www.concertina.net/tunes_convert.html. Then edit in my corrections. Then press "submit". Then print out the results.

Re: How to correct an ABC file?

Sorry, I should have been clearer. I meant, how can I incorporate the corrections into my tunebook in ABC Navigator 2?

Dow, I don't understand ABC enough to have a clue as to where to edit in the changes. Please help!

Cheers,
Michael

Re: How to correct an ABC file?

Michael,
Get your tune up on the screen with ABC Navigator 2. Then click on ABC Tune on the top left hand corner. Select EDIT, then you can alter the tune.
Then click the OK (tick sign) on the right hand side. Then click the SAVE button on the top left hand corner.

Hope this helps.

Re: How to correct an ABC file?

Alternatively, why not just download the amended version to overwrite the one you already have?

Re: How to correct an ABC file?

John J -- it's because of my ignorance.

There is no complete "amended version". If you look at the link, you'll see that Dow posted corrections to several bars. Being unfamiliar with ABC, I can't tell from looking at the file where they should go. This is what I need help with.

As well, I would love it if someone who knows the tune (Dow?) could check the notation in the database to see if it's just as incorrect as the ABC, or maybe incorrect in a different way, or perhaps correct?

Sorry if it's asking too much.

Cheers,
Michael
