It's almost time for the 2006 St. Louis Tionol!

It's almost time for the 2006 St. Louis Tionol!

Last year was fantastic and this year looks to be even better! A master class by Kevin Henry AND Peadar O'Loughlin! Other classes by Ronan Browne, Michael Cooney, John Carty, John Skelton, Denis Cahill, Ged Foley -- and the list just goes on! Unbelievable. Concerts, workshops, sessions, little or no sleep, full pints -- almost sounds like heaven doesn't it. I can hardly wait :-D hope to see you in St. Louis!

Re: It's almost time for the 2006 St. Louis Tionol!

Hey Ken- looking forward to seeing you again. I'm not taking a workshop this year because I'll have my 3 month old son along with me but my husband is taking a bodhran workshop and my bandmates will be along too.

I'm hoping to make it to a session on Saturday night and possibly on Sunday as well. We'll be handing the baby off and taking turns playing. :-)

See you there!

Re: It's almost time for the 2006 St. Louis Tionol!

Hi Tara, Ken,

Folks here in Bloomington, in Louisville and Vincennes are all a-buzz about Tionol, and I'm excited, too.

Old friends and new...!! One couple, new friends from Evansville, IN, are coming and doing the Parent Hand-Off with their three-year-old son, too.

Tara, will you hang around Nerinx at all or wander about lovely St. Lou ...?

See you there!

Re: It's almost time for the 2006 St. Louis Tionol!

Hey Steve- it will be good to see you and Min again too. I have been meaning to send you a CD for oh...about ten months now- I'll just bring it along. :-)

I'm sure we'll hang about Nerinx a bit- my sister is coming from CA and I couldn't convince her to bring her fiddle, so we're not sure what Saturday will look like during the day but we'll definitely be bringing the lad to the concert on Saturday and hopefully we can hang out until Sunday afternoon before heading home. The Sunday session was one of the most fun bits of the weekend for me last year.

For anyone interested- http://www.tionol.org

Re: It's almost time for the 2006 St. Louis Tionol!

Hey Tara,

Were we to trade CDs? Do I owe you one? <GGG>
I'm re-excited to hear yours!! LOL!!

Foo on that sister for leaving her fiddle home. Will we be able to goad her into playing anyway? Maybe while you have an armful of child? <GG> We must punish her somehow...

In years past I've gotten to the concert late, taken a seat in the balcony, where all the heat gathers, and gone right to sleep (sleep being a somewhat rare commodity throughout the weekend... ). The Lad may wish to do the same... <GGG>

Ahhh, John D's... Min always starts by asking the girls who work there which bartender makes the best bloody marys...

The year before last we got there early, like... 10:30am and then -closed- the place with Brock & Stephanie and had to get a hotel room for the rest of the night and drive home on Monday...

So many tunes, so little time...

The anticipation is delicious.

I wish I could be there. Had I been blessed with the psychic powers and could have foreseen what would be going on with life right now back in like, January, I would have gone.

Re: It's almost time for the 2006 St. Louis Tionol!

Hi Folks,

I'll have my 11-year-old with me (coming from Berkeley, CA), but as my parents live in St. Louis, he can hang out with them.

For all of you with kids in tow though, you have to check out the City Museum - there's no place like it; you jaws will drop when you see it, and your kids will love it:

It's our main kid-destination whenever we're in town.

John D's...is that McGurk's?

Re: It's almost time for the 2006 St. Louis Tionol!

Hi Keith,

Yep, McGurk's.

Is the zoo there still a good'n?

Is the City Museum the huge, modern-looking complex south of the highway east of the Galleria Mall area? There's a bridge or walkway that's a sculpted limestone snake and huge limestone tortoises on the lawn, always some great inflated animal or big sign on the building to advertise the current attraction.

Oh... the City Museum ... is that the building way downtown with the city bus and the big slides and all that crazy stuff... Late-night clubbing and all that? It's east of the Schlafly Brewery, right? A whole city block...

Someone just showed us that last year.

Re: It's almost time for the 2006 St. Louis Tionol!

Hey Tara, Steve -- Looking forward to seeing everyone! In our entourage there are are 5 coming from the Dayton/Cincinnati area, three from Buffalo and one from Michigan. We'll hit the Brewery for sessions on Friday night first thing. Let the Guiness and the Powers flow! I think I'll be taking Ged Foley's workshop. I want to pick his brain on constructing sets for sessions. He is a genius at putting tunes together on the fly. ~Ken

Re: It's almost time for the 2006 St. Louis Tionol!

What's the session scene like at the tionol? Is there a central hotel or location? I see three hotels listed. Looks like there are lots of concerts to keep people busy. Are there multiple sessions, or just the ones listed? (Seems like they could get crowded.) Just trying to figure out if I should go. Oh yeah, and would you need a car?

Re: It's almost time for the 2006 St. Louis Tionol!

You do need some kind of transportation as it's spread over the St. Louis area.

The two pubs that host the sessions are huge. Last year there were at least a half dozen sessions going on at each pub at the same time. The sessions are phenominal. I sat in one at the Brewery (three stories full of great nooks for sessions) on Saturday night last year with the likes of Dale Russ on fiddle and Tim Britton on pipes. At the same time John Carty and Ged Foley were playing in a session on the first floor. On Sunday at McGurks there was a "C" session in one nook, an intermediate in another and a killer tier one session in yet another. There is truely an opportunity for everyone to play at their skill level.

The hotels listed are just suggestions. There are no "official" tionol lodgings to my knowledge.

Hey Tara,

Looking forward to seeing you and your child (and husband and band) and if you need help or advice, my wife and I can help.

It should be a great time, as usual.

Re: It's almost time for the 2006 St. Louis Tionol!

RE: the City Museum, yes, the latter. It's a former shoe factory that's been turned into a habitrail for kids by collaging recycled building parts, buses, airplanes, log cabins, whatever. I don't know about late-night uses; mainly know it as a kid-oriented destination, but I think it's worth a visit by anyone. It's creators obviously aren't listening to their attorneys - it's unbelievable what they've done - but that's a good thing!

I'm really looking forward to the music; I've heard John Skelton and Tim Britton play out here before - both really stunningly good players. I've "overheard" a few workshops by John as well, and he seems like a great teacher.

Hey there Steve & Min - looking forward to catching up over 'a few' tunes ;-)

I'm my own boss now - no need to call in sick Monday muahahaha...

(laughter is short lived as I scurry back to work now)

Re: It's almost time for the 2006 St. Louis Tionol!

We're strapped in and counting down. For folks looking for other diversions (I'm not sure why anyone would want to do that but...) the city museum has been mentioned - which is great. Also, the zoo and science museum are real kid pleasers - both are in Forest Park.
Hope to see everyone there.
Mike
