In preparation for some St. Patrick's gigs, I ask you
what you all find to be the optimum microphone setup(s)
for concertina, onstage &/or in the recording studio.
I am only an amatuer but for playing gigs or dances the Velcro stick-on mics for the right and left sides will work well. If you have a noisey instrument they also can pickup the mechanical sounds from the concertina which isn't a problem when you are part of a group with a lot of pub noise. In the studio I would use two dynamic mics on the right and left side or one good quality condenser mic with phantom power located a foot or two in front of the concertina. I used the condenser mic with a guitar and mandolin with their own pickups and I liked the results. Good luck!
Maybe you should check out Niall Vallely or Padraig Rynnes websites as they allways use clip on mics(if thats what you are interested in). I am sure you can e mail them and they'll try help you out.
I hadn't thought of the sites you all suggest, so this is All Good!
My initial thought was a pair of condensors, then I thought that a pair of dynamics with nice, tight patters would serve better onstage. The note about a mic on each side with a nice condensor in front is sweet, thanks.
I'm interested to learn about the small mics that can be velcro'd on!
Ken, nice to hear from you! Yes, it's for Matt W. I have a button box, but 'tina ... noooo, not me... <GGG> Matt is pretty much the next Culchie now, and we're having a great time.
For this March Madness Erik Peterson, a recent transplant from Minneapolis and a contradance veteran, is joining us also, on mandolin and tenor banjo.
The one company that comes to mind that makes mics that velcro on each side of the concertina is MicroVox. They have a site on the internet and I think Button Box in Amherst Mass. has them in stock.
Concertina microphones?

Re: Concertina microphones?
Steve, are you playing concertina now? Or is this for someone else I know - Matt W. perhaps? (Apologies to everyone for such local talk).
Ken C.
P.S. there's tons on this over at www.concertina.net if you search the forums there - Chris Timson in England has done a lot of it.
