for a phrase like FAFc FAF2 in the Key of C I've been using this fingering on whistle.
XXX XDO (F)
XXO ODO (A)
XXX XDO (F)
OXX ODO (c)
XXX XDO (F)
XXO ODO (A)
XXX XDO (F)
X=Covered
D=Half-way covered
O=Open
I've been keeping the F half holed to reduce the fudge factor, is this the begining of a bad habit? I use it cause it works on my whistle & saves a lot of time & energy. What do you guys think?
Very much like you've done it here - although it seems an odd kind of a phrase. For the A I'd probably play XXO XDO! It comes out a bit flat depending on your whistle, but at speed it barely matters.
A while back someone showed me how to play the 3rd part of the Flogging Reel in a similar way and it took all the hit and miss out of playing that stick f-nat phrase:
If you play with the flats of your fingers, this kind of trick only makes sense, as far as I can see.
Last summer however I asked the great Mary Bergin to demonstrate this passage to me - she plays with the fingertips and she half-holes the c and the f with incredible precision, lifting everything off each time.
Wow, hats off to Mary Bergin - I'm far from that kind of precision. The C-Whistle makes that a lot easier true, I guess I should have made it clearer that I was talking about when one of those C naturalish phrases comes up in a Gmajor or Dmajor tune. Tunes like the Flogging Reel, Bunch of Keys etc. Thanks guys for the replies
