i'm a wee bit confused about some of the songs i really want to learn. Davy Spillane's 'Tribute to Johnny Doran' for example - does anyone know the Jigs in that piece?
Can anyone help?
Here we go again ... you've got the recording, so what's stopping you learning it off that? It's a serious question. If you lack the skill to learn a tune from a recording, get practicing. Now's your chance
hi scrappy, what works for me is to listen again and again while doing other things or no things, and then play what i remember, and then listen some more. believe it or not, it's getting easier! but it does take time.
My favourite song in the whole wide world is Danny Boy I play it on my fiddle all the day. It has a kind of spirtiual calming effect on me, which is good - because otherwise I would 'Scream' everytime someone used the word song when talking about a tune.
Really, Ive never noticed that - in fact the only time its ever used is either in a wind up or by a complete newbie who has never been to a session....I wonder which of those two the orginal poster is?
guys - i can play it no problem, i can play most things by Davy Spillane on the pipes (i say that mearly to repair my ego), but i need the score so my school teacher can look at it.
You should explain to your school teacher that there aren't "scores" available for every tune, album track, etc which has been recorded.
Even if you identify the titles of the jigs and find written versions of them, they won't necessarily(probably not) be as played on the album.
Even the likes of "Lunasa The Music" isn't an exact indication of how they would play the tunes. It's just the bare bones.
MIchael is correct up to a point. You've got the album and learn the tunes from there. In fact, you could even transcribe them for your teacher or get some one to do it for you.
Spillane's piping is ridiculously complex (when he's playing trad stuff... I'm not sure I can describe his weird, new agey stuff, so I'm not going to try). Even experienced pipers who are amazingly good don't play like that.
I sometimes look up the biog when somone posts an interesting or strange question, just to see where they're coming from - it may help you get a handle on the person, the sort of thing you get from appearance, accent, body language, when you meet someone in the flesh. Those that have left nothing in their biog are as bad as people who phone you up and withhold their number.
Come on, Scrappy, give us a bit of info - you can always embroider, lie, be a bit imprecise to avoid identification, try to add a bit of entertainment to fill in the hours. We've already worked out how old you must be, fill in a bit more without giving yourself away.
"people who phone you up and withhold their number."
They are all from Pakistan aren't they Pete?
Would you really want to phone them back?
But I agree. What about a bit of Scrappy Bio bucko?
As Pete says you "can always embroider," after all Pete did. Don't let his name here fool you, he's actually from Barbados!
& here are some of the photos he took last summer when friends for thesession called to see him: http://barbadosphotogallery.com/pics051114.htm
There's many a true word spoken in jest, Ptarmy ! In fact I am one quarter Barbadian, as my grandmother was born there, which makes me entitled to represent the West Indies in any sporting endeavour in which I am the best - draughts might be my strongest suit. Same granny was also half Scots, and half Irish, so I am concurrently 1/4 Celtic, and 1/4 Barbadian.
But I don't look like any of the charming people illustrated in your link, so you will have to continue looking for me elsewhere.
PS Those people phoning you up at random are only doing their job, so I always try to be sociable, ask them what the weather is like there, the time of day for them, etc, but they usually ring straight off. It's the companies they work for that are evil.
Yeah, nice one Michael - I was wondering when someone was going to say it.
But I kind of know what the young chaps means. It is hard being 'this' good - and frankly when you can play as well as Tommy Peoples, Siobhan Peoples, Tom Morrow, and (insert fabulous fiddlers name) like I can - then it gets a little hard to be unaffected.....Although I try my best. Sigh - hardly anyone knows what I go through. Why - why god??? Why me? Why bestow this faboulous gift upon me?? sniff sniff.
And with that said and with that said Scrappy - I double dare you to go to a session and play only Davy's stuff allllllll night longggggg! They will love you for it.....really.....they will
Uh oh - think I got up on the wrong side of the coffin this morning!
Both "Laitch" and "TheSilver Spear" answered your query, Scrappy, so at least have the decency to give the two of them a bit of thanks. I would have helped if I'd had the recording you asked about.
Query - how can someone without a d*ck be a w*nk*r ?
kenny, as much as your query made me laugh, it is a bit of a stupid 'smart arse' question. one doesnt have to toss to be a tosser, its jus a term for some one who is annoying or STUPIDLY IDIOTIC - just like michael
Scrappy,
If you are so good, you don't have to worry whether Michael hears a recording of you or whether or not he enjoys it!
You aren't really helping your cause with the attitude you've adopted here. The "i AM 17" bit is fairly obvious from your posts and hardly needs emphasising.
I think he is getting me mixed up with michael - he sent me a mail telling me I was a smart arse - I said basically that it was obvious that he is very young. So there we go, I WAS right!
I'm probably going to wish I hadn't, but I'll step in the mud on occasion. I don't see anything in Michael's initial post which could be construed as judgmental or tactless.
" If you lack the skill to learn a tune from a recording, get practicing. Now's your chance". The "If" is a key word here. No judgment was made. I'd say Scrappy's response " dont worry about it, im jus fed up of people saying i cant play my own instrument." No one here including Michael, indicated you couldn't. You have been making the judgments here, not Michael. Read first, then post.
Scrappy, cool down. I am also 17 and just did the same thing on the C&F Flute Forum. Trust me, recording is not as easy as you may think. You will f*ck up the recording and make an ass out of yourself. Well, atleast that is what I did. It was not worth it.
ok, i wont worry about it. i just asked for the score to a piece of music, then all this "you dont need it" responce happened. Well if i didnt need it then why the hell did i ask?
help!

To answer the question, he plays O'Farrell's Welcome and Garret Barry's Jig.

BTW, he plays those very flashily and heavily ornamented with lots of variations. The dots aren't going to be that useful for you.
