Re: Band name time again. . .

Well, most of them sound like a novelty band to me. I guess it depends on how seriously you want to be taken.

Re: Band name time again. . .

I like Butterfipple. Just has that ring to it, of course all the punters will be asking "whats a Fipple? Play Danny Boy."

Re: Band name time again. . .

I doubt any of them will be adopted in the end. (At least by me) but ya have to start somewhere.

Oh, to be a celto-punk band! Imagine the naming freedom!

Re: Band name time again. . .

Try one of Dave Barry's 'Good Names for A Rock Band'. Any of them will work well enough.

Re: Band name time again. . .

I'm afraid I'm not taken with any of the above names, but then the process took us several months recently, and I'm still not too happy with the result.

Re: Band name time again. . .

Apart from Butterfipple they all sound awful. Even butterfipple doesn't strike me as very good.

What's wrong with them? They're all too inward looking, and trying to be referentially clever in a place where the clever is wasted (i.e. on the punter who hasn't yet heard you).

For a band you just need something simple. If you want it to be referential to your style, try a tune name: call yourselves something like The Poll Halfpenny, The Star Above The Garter, The Thief of Lochaber, Leitrim Rovers, Roaring Water.

Re: Band name time again. . .

These names do not appeal to me. Moreover, some of them are like asking for trouble - especially the Impostors, Frauds and foul drops. One bad gig and you will have a name-based joke following you for ever and ever.

I'd second Showaddy, however - my favourite posttunal name for a band would be Smash the Windows.

Re: Band name time again. . .

Thank you Conan, for a much needed *splorf* and ROFLMTO.

It's been a stressful couple of weeks here at Showaddy Towers, but that cheered me up.

Re: Band name time again. . .

Maybe you could negotiate with Aidan Crossey for the use of one of the imaginary tune names mentioned on his excellent Pay The Reckoning site:

I'm just glad you didn't come up with something rude Mark.

Re: Band name time again. . .

'The Pure Prod' would be a good name for a traditional band from *the other side*. No doubt some more advanced members of my species thought of it decades ago.

Re: Band name time again. . .

Fipple and diddle can sound vaguely obscene to those that don't know the terms--I would avoid cute, or unpronouncable names in general--speaking from experience as a member of a band with a goofy name.

Re: Band name time again. . .

Wormdiet, you knew, didn’t you, that “not asking for suggestions” would be read as “okay, let’s hear yer whacko ideas”?

Re: Band name time again. . .

Considering your band name might go up on a marquis, I'd go for something like

Naked Coeds and Free Chicken Wings

Re: Band name time again. . .

Bob - of course.

But - had I posted the usual "give me a good band name," some w!se@ss would have posted a bunch of links and flamed me for being a clueless newb who can't use the search function (Which is true, but. .. ) This way the same results are achieved with less ugliness.

Re: Band name time again. . .

You call this "less ugliness"? :-)

Re: Band name time again. . .

The Faerie Frauds?? Naaahh. . .

I suppose we'll be reduced to opening a Gaelic dictionary and alighting on the first pronounceable two-syllable word.

Re: Band name time again. . . and again . . . and again ~

You need another list...

I love a little book Ray Bradbury wrote, outside of his usual, like "The Martian Chronicles", this one is called "Zen in the Art of Writing". It is thin and a quick read. He has one of the usual suggestions about brain storming ideas, and we used that for finding band names and other things, as a group. We often did this over a drink and a meal, or somewhere in between that and a session of music... It worked a charm, but it did require one difficult thing, to put aside the internal editor. The idea is that you don't stop anything, no matter how stupid it might be, or silly, or foul, or embarrassing. You let the thoughts flow as freely as you can, and EVERYTHING gets written down without critical comment. You just do it. You amass as much as possible and ~ when we have managed to waylay that damned internal editor ~ it has ALWAYS worked. We've always been able to find some pearls amongst the shight. If you don't allow this diarrhoea of ideas. A little loosener helps, music and a tipple are recommended to lubricate and spark the muse...

But those names above, really, you need another list, or to open it up to the free flowing interchange of madness here on site, with you participating. You could collect your favourites and then we could all vote on say the final top 10 or so?

Trust us... Heh, heh, heh... ;-)

Re: Band naming time again. . .

Oops ~ I meant to say ~ "If you allow this diarrhoea of ideas, can ignore the usual stench that pours out with everything else including the sink ~ then you'll be surprised with the things that would have remained undiscovered if you hold back or analyze every new arrival, if you start picking over it... Just let it go, make your discoveries and criticisms later...
