Re: How to sound like Arty McGlynn?

Oh, you mean the EQ settings on the pickup? I’ve only heard Arty through a pickup once and it was the most horrible plastic quacking imitation guitar sound I’ve ever heard. That was at least ten years ago, though. Maybe he’s got a better setup now.

Anyway, the sound you get coming out the speakers will depend on the guitar as well as the pickup. You just have to listen and tweak until it sounds best.

Maybe I have explained in a wrong way

I would like to know how to use the guitar Previum (bass, treble, etc):how does Arty equalize his guitar?

Re: How to sound like Arty McGlynn?

Do you have an EQ (equalizer) with at least four bands and a notch filter? That's usually the minimum you need to start making a guitar pickup sound decent (depending on your standards). Often, with guitar pickups, there's a narrow frequency band that you need to squelch to tone down the quacky sound. If you can isloate that, it helps a lot.

Easy. Speak very quietly in a Tyrone accent.

Re: How to sound like Arty McGlynn?

I'm sure that Arty uses nylon strings, at least on the bass strings, this is what gives the great bass sound when live.

Re: How to sound like Arty McGlynn?

Does not use nylons

Re: How to sound like Arty McGlynn?

Someone is shouting accross the room ,"double track everything","and double track that again".
He uses a top takamine for live playing.
Most pickups won't sound as good as a tak.
Then, you've got to have that touch and big hands.
Maybe,he wants to sound like you...

Hey, surely what Arty wears in the privacy of his own home is his business. Anyway, if he chooses to wear stiletto heals along with the nylons he won't get much of a tap to go with his toons!

Re: How to sound like Arty McGlynn?

First of all congratulations to all the "witty" people who have been absolutely no help at all - though to be honest I thought the nylons gag was funny.

The simple answer is that it is impossible to give any clear guidance to you on EQ settings - best if you experiment to find a sound that YOU think sounds like Arty.

EQs can help in accentuating the bass response, it is then possible to use the bass strings singly to provide more "bottom" to the accompaniment. However my guess is that Arty would vary his settings to suit various forms of accompaniment. I remember him getting a great drone effect on his bottom D string at a Patrick Street gig once.

Some other musicians prefer to boost the treble and middle response, it is really down to your own taste. Do you have a PRESENCE control, that can also have an impact. Really the only advice is to experiment till you get the best sound.
