Can you use Valentines day as an excuse for tunes?

Can you use Valentines day as an excuse for tunes?

It just occured to me that I never get tunes on Valentines day, simply because I`m obligated to do the whole romantic thing.
I wonder is there a precedence for having a Valentines Day session.
Could you play tunes in said session that would reflect the feel of the day?
My tunes would be:

I buried my wife and danced on her grave.
Old hag you have killed me.
Get up old woman and shake yourself ( really nice tune)
To name a few.

Maybe I`m just not the romantic type.
So do you endure Valentines day and do the whole romantic carry on, or is it just an excuse to go to a session?
What do you prefer, a session, or candle lit dinner?

Re: Can you use Valentines day as an excuse for tunes?

Does anyone really do all the romantic carry on? I thought it was just something hyped up by the Sun and the Daily Mail as an excuse for showing women in their knickers.

Re: Can you use Valentines day as an excuse for tunes?

I would like to play in a session but my partner doesn't play in a session so I do the whole romantic thing with him.

I'm not sure I buy this festival mallarky.

Re: Can you use Valentines day as an excuse for tunes?

"All the romatic carry on"

Well, I'll tell you about my romantic carry on today:

Remember, I wear Tartan underpants! So spend money on flowers? You must be daft - £50 for a dozen roses! Surely it's the thought that counts?

By the way, did anyone see the Antiques Roadshow at the weekend, where the man had spend a total of £75,000 on jewellery for three of he & his wife's Anniversaries!
Jings, crivins & help ma Bob! Wonder what he spent on 'her' Valentines present?

Anyway, back to my Valentines day - aye, it's the thought that counts.

Well, as a gesture of my undying love fur ma wee lassie, I got out of my sick bed this morning & drove her to her hospital appointment in a town 20 miles from our home!
Now I thought that was pretty heroic, even by Willie Wallace's standards, but to cap it all, I also gave her a wad of notes to go & spend in the town afterwards!
So she will return around teatime.

So what did she do for me? - I hear you ask!

Well, imagine my delight, when I got home to find she had taken 'my' house keys - too!!!!!!
So when I got home I couldn't get in!!!!!
So, as she also forgot to take her mobile phone, I am forced to forsake my sick bed all day & am forced to spend the day - stuck in this Library chair!!!!
OK this does give me plenty of time to tease the likes of showadd etc here on session.org but please don't speak to me about Valentine's Day...........BAAAAAAH HUMBUG!!!!!!

Next year she'll get yin red rose & am stayin' in ma bed!

Needless to say, as I've a lousy flu, I'll be stayin home tonight, assuming I do eventually get back inside - so there'll be NO Valentines Tunes for me!

Re: Can you use Valentines day as an excuse for tunes?

Yes, that was supposed to read "romantic carry on" & not 'rheumatic carry on'!

Re: Can you use Valentines day as an excuse for tunes?

Showaddy since when did the Sun need an excuse?

I'm not currently romantcally attached, so any offers of a romantic meal from an eligible young lady will be gratefully received.

Likewise offers from a shameless oul' hussy,

I'm not proud.

Re: Can you use Valentines day as an excuse for tunes?

It strikes me as just being an excuse for Mrs. O. to come to the session in her knickers....
Well, actually she wears all her other layers (many) of clothes as well, so it's not that exciting - The Daily Mail have never asked to take her photo. And then she sits there and complains that I haven't given that rich Mr. Hallmark a fiver on her behalf.
Valentine's Day is all very well if your trying to charm a winsome otterette into your holt, but it seems a bit pointless and unnecessarilly pricy once you have her chained to the kitchen sink...

I'd better get my coat and go and buy Mrs. O. some flowers, I guess...

... Once I've finished the washing up.

Re: Can you use Valentines day as an excuse for tunes?

Mark, a quick scout through Highgate cemetery is yer only man for the flowers.

Just make sure you remove the cards first.

Re: Can you use Valentines day as an excuse for tunes?

Ottery, don't worry too much if you can't find any flowers. I'm sure the little woman won't 'holt' it against you!

Re: Can you use Valentines day as an excuse for tunes?

I'll be at our session tonight. Been married close to 30 years - if she hasn't figgered it our yet, a card isn't gonna help! I'll be home later.

Re: Can you use Valentines day as an excuse for tunes?

It's a fair old haul from here to Highgate Cemetery, Conán. No, it'll have to be the dustbins behind the swan Hotel again. They had a wedding last weekend, and the bins don't get emptied till tomorrow, so I'm quids in, I'll just have to rinse the spilt Baileys off them....

Re: Can you use Valentines day as an excuse for tunes?

Back in the middle of the last century my Dad's cousin used to run a flower stall where the main source of supply was night visits to the cemetery.

His parents, when he got caught, were so horrified that they "put" him into the navy.

He never wrote or came home until he retired about 30 years later - by which time he was in command of a significant part of the British fleet.

He had a beard.

Re: Can you use Valentines day as an excuse for tunes?

Good on ya flutedoog. We're heading for our 25th next year! Suppose I'll HAVE to buy her a present, that year!

Re: Can you use Valentines day as an excuse for tunes?

Mrs Showaddy and I have the same arrangement as flutedoog. 27 years now she's washed my socks and I've won the bread - what good would a card do either of us.

25 years Ptarm? - day at the seaside, with a chinky takeaway on the way home. Get the kids to wash up.

# Posted on February 14th 2006 by showaddydadito

Re: Can you use Valentines day as an excuse for tunes?

Day at the Seaside - in February Showadd?
Aye, I suppose yer braggin that you can do that across the water there? Ha Ha
Or have you flitted recently, to be near Dow?

Day out does sound like a good idea, so I think I'll plan on taking a day off work.

As for kids washing up, our only youngster Kevin, will no doubt be spending his Valentines night playing Jazz in some smokey basement club in the bowels o' Auld Reeky!
Like father like son - music comes first!

In the breaks, if he opens a window, he will probably hear Micheal Gill rattlin away - unless MG is out wining & dining his better half or halves? :-)

Re: Can you use Valentines day as an excuse for tunes?

Janek, I'd be on the next flight to Warsaw if that were the case!

Please tell her I said hello and that I hope she doesn't miss me too much
:¬)

Blás, you'll have to fill me in on the name of the shameless hussy you had in mind.

Re: Can you use Valentines day as an excuse for tunes?

I'd as soon go to a session. There needs to be more tunes written by women about men. I Buried My Husband and Danced on His Grave type of thing, you know.

Or maybe I should use the holiday as an excuse to finally post my top ten reasons why a set of uilleann pipes is better than a man.

Mark, the plastic ones are wipe-clean. They're your best bet.

Re: Can you use Valentines day as an excuse for tunes?

Why not the tunes and the romance? Since when are they not connected? I saved every valentine my schweetie ever gave me over 29 years, even the awful hand-drawn ones. Now there are no more years to come....

Re: I use SAINT!!!! Valentine's day as an excuse for tunes?

My beloved is easily pleased.
We went to a concertina session last night, I treated her to pie and chips and she sat there listening to FIVE anglos playing at once (it was a "quiet" night - there are usually eight or ten on the go at once). She didn't complain once.

Is there some silly politically correct notion that incorrectly calling it "Valentines Day" (without a possesive apostrophe), suddenly rids it of all Christian significance?.
Will England be celebrating "George's Day" next?

Re: Can you use Valentines day as an excuse for tunes?

"My beloved is easily pleased."

Aye, they all say that Geoff, but you need to find out what she 'really means', when she tells you that....................

Re: Can you use Valentines day as an excuse for tunes?

I often use the phrase Paddy's Day but hopefully the significance isn't completely lost.

Re: Can you use Valentines day as an excuse for tunes?

I was off yesterday, for some very flooky reason , so I went to a regular Tuesday session. It was fun, nothing particularly religious went on except the bit about St James Gate.

Re: Can you use Valentines day as an excuse for tunes?

Aye, she was "pleased", Ptarmi, and I'm taking her away to Oxford this weekend - retail therapy whilst I go to accordion workshops (Collette O'Leary, ITM of course).
