Birkin Tree and the moving beauty of Con Cassidy's
Birkin Tree and the moving beauty of Con Cassidy's
Hi, my name is Marina and I'm new here. Some years ago I happened to listen to a wonderful cd by a band called Birkin Tree. I know it's not polite to ask, but I have been searching for one of the tunes they play since I bought the cd. The tune is written by Con Cassidy and it's simply called Con Cassidy's.
I think it's the most beautiful tune I've ever heard, I can't keep from crying every time I hear it but I'm not as good as to transcribe it by myself. I would appreciate if any of you knew could tell me where to find it. I know there are several with that name but so far all those I tried were not the one I was searching for (Altan play one with that name but it's the wrong one).
I appreciate any help, thank you very very much!
Marina
Re: Birkin Tree and the moving beauty of Con Cassidy's
Is it a jig, reel or something else? In addition to the Altan tune the Northern Fiddler has four jigs collected from Con Cassidy. None have titles except that one is called Con Cassidy's. There is a reel called Con Cassidy's and another untitled one. In addition to that there are three untitled highlands and a brass band march! I guess any of these might be called Con Cassidy's. If you could the key, the first few notes and the type of tune, maybe I could find it in this book. Steve
Re: Birkin Tree and the moving beauty of Con Cassidy's
Welcome, Marina! Can you sing the tune? Have you listened to it so much that you know the tune, can hear it in your head without putting on the CD? If so, try picking up your instrument and figuring it out. It'll be slow if you've never tried doing such a thing before, but that's the way that Irish music is passed on.
Otherwise, if you have an mp3 of the thing, you can send it to one of us and we could give it a go for you. I'd be happy to, myself, although players like Brad or Will are much faster than I am.
Is Con Cassidy still with us, anyone know? I haven't heard that he passed away, but he'd be in his nineties or perhaps even in his hundred if he's still alive. Con Cassidy was from Teelin in southwest Donegal, Marina -- one of the great Donegal Teelin-style fiddlers. He learned to play from Paddy Barron and his cousin Frank Cassidy. There are quite a few of his tunes that have passed into the tradition, although I'll admit I only know two or three of them. He had a rather light, smoothish bowing, with very quick fingering. His style was known for being very lively, graceful, and inventive.

Hi! thanks for the replying! It's really nice to know that there are chances to get this tune!
Steve: it's a reel (I'd define it a hunting reel if such a definition ever existed). I think Birkin Tree play it in D major.
Zina: I've tried to play it but it's too difficult without the transcription. Yes, I can send you an mp3. To which address shall I send it to?
About Birkin Tree, I don't know if any of you knows them but they are great. They performed with many Irish artists like Martin Hayes (who wrote some notes about the band on their cd). You can listen to some mp3 (submitted by the band itself) at: http://www.celticworld.it/musica/birkin_tree.htm
Let me know who is interested in getting the tune! Thank you again for your kind support!

Marina,
I think your best bet is to send the MP3. The reels in the book don't look promising. The one called Con Cassidy's is in F. It could have been transposed to D but you would lose a couple of the lowest notes. The other unnamed reel is in G. There's a third reel too called Kitty in the Lane in A.

Ciao marina, mi chiamo Giovanni e sono abbonato a questo sito ormai da un bel po' e speravo che qualche italiano saltasse fuori! Ho ben presente il pezzo, è un reel e non è quello che c'è qui. Prvoverò a cercare anch'io.
Ciao!
SORRY EVERYBODY FOR THE ITALIAN! NO MORE....

Marina, did you notice that Gian marco transcribed a Con Cassidy's for you? Is it the one that you are looking for? Take a look at http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display.php/971
